The open Internet and World Wide Web, fragile and insecure as they may seem at times, remain the surest way to publish what you want and have it remain online, accessible to the networked world. http://radar.oreilly.com/2012/07/email-privacy-twitter-terms-of-service-own-your-platform.html

When you own your own platform online, it’s much harder for a private company nervous about the reaction of advertisers or partners to take your voice away, or a billionaire to remove you.A new generation is now relearning this lesson, but with new tools, open protocols, & elders who still believe we can build the Web we want.https://techpolicy.press/how-to-open-an-outpost-in-social-media-exile/

This piece by @profcarroll helped me think most deeply about Mastodon so far.I was wondering about how hard it would be to set up an instance. Turns out the hardest part is building, nurturing moderating, & protecting a community, once you set a server up!As with USENET forums, email listservs, blogs, newspaper comments, Facebook pages & groups, every community needs good stewards, https://digiphile.info/2013/01/29/want-good-online-comments-create-community-and-moderate-them/
