i’ve been running an experiment for ~2mo now focused on #sustainable #computing inspired by #permacomputing and #collapse computing.i had to ask myself before starting this experiment, what do i really need to get projekts done?repurposing people’s trash, i found a machine for 5$usd.epoxy:chassis: lenovo m92p circa 2013cpu: i3-2120 2c/4tram: 4gb @ 2100mhzssd: 128gb and shredded/failingos: #nixos with impermanencewm: i3 stripped to the bone with #nix wallpaperpower: ~9w idle ~30w peakvariances: cpu governed to .5 clock-speedfan profile: powersavingyes, this is what most would consider a slow machine but the way if view it, i needed to test my tolerance for such things. after ~2mo of continued use (and abuse) it works fine. it also taught me a lot about myself, and perhaps others.lessons learned:can compute off solar 100%optimising your system is an erector set meets rabbitholebrowsers while useful, are slow and ill-optimised my compute habits were inefficient, nobody needs 30 tabs open at once (prove me wrong)less pids == smaller attack surfacei spent less time online and more time unpluggedthe experiment is not over. next step is to fabricate parts via #3dprinting to build portable #homelab which can tolerate massive amounts of time minus internetznow to find a nice person with a #3dprinter to assist me.postscriptum: the machine is named epoxy because i build a drive sled out of epoxy because it didn’t have one 🥴

@y3mz I was looking through someone's personal site / blog recently and they had a small excerpt on one of their pages called the "Intel Core 2 Duo rule". The gist of it was they (the site author) thought that if your software couldn't run performantly on a core 2 duo-based machine then it was poorly optimised. Now, that might be a bit of an extreme standpoint for me, indeed they seemed to have a lot of built up anger towards web tech/developers, but I think its an interesting mindset.

i'd like to read this, should you happen to recall the url. both you and the author are right. so am i. so is everyone. i follow the dictum of `compute how the fvck you want`. i have and am choosing a different path. the c2d procs while still useful in this day although the tdp on them are high and a focus i have is energy savings. the way i see it, as long as i have a 64-bit instruction set and the processor isn't something that's serving as a desk-heater, i'm solid.thx for the response.

@y3mz yeah I like the concept just applied to a more modern energy efficient processor. I wish i could remember the URL... My overall computer usage has not changed much over the years (Web browsing, email, IDE, maybe one or two other things open) yet somehow we need more and more powerful computers... to do what feels like the exact same workload as before.

yah now it's going to keep me awake all night (which i already am). sounds like we need to go on a treasure hunt. and i call myself an #archivist tragic i know.mine has not changed drastically in decades. - browser for when #gopher or #gemini is not an option- terminal for terminal-ish things- mutt -> email- signal-desktop (though i'm getting weechat fixed up)- weechat -> matrix && irc- ffmpeg and friends for mediai do use vscode for those times when a script or codebase has more loc than the dead sea scrolls.

was it this post? https://www.akitaonrails.com/2017/01/17/optimizing-linux-for-slow-computersif not, i keep searching.regarding processor. i'll shell out for a modern proc that's ultra-energy efficient. most would not, but i would because i have an energy factor to think about at this time.protip: the nucs are a good balance. but don't buy them if you can avoid it. the knockoffs at half the price are just as a good and usually have a bios that's within the realm of reality.
