i wonder what people who want to consolidate power are going to pull on the Fediverse to try to break it

@thor Lobby to change the law, making compliance too difficult for small operators?

@thor It has already been suggested that they would try to figure out new features to add, which would be sufficiently attractive to a large enough amount of people residing on corporate instances, that the new features would legitimate breaking full compatibility.Most likely there would be some partial compatability to keep federation, while people on non-corporate platforms would start to feel like second class citizens or "freemium"-users because they lacked said features.

@amici ah, the good old embrace-extend-extinguish tactic...

@thor Before that though, they would try the old strategy of integrating Mastodon into their platforms, so that people attained a "seamless" and "extra-useful" experience. Gradually becoming captives of the platform (Google, MS, Meta, Apple). The new features would just be the last stage to make people leave the fully free- and open source space for corporate solutions.

Interesting. So, people would prefer new features over their sovereignty to speak freely? Sort of, like Twitter? It is a possibility, of course. But, would this ‘break’ anything for the genuine sovereign servers? In other words, would it matter?

People, by using servers like those, cut themselves off from sovereign servers - it doesn’t ‘break the fediverse’.

@thor @bushgrad @amici like defederating Fediverse instances?

@bushgrad @thor I suppose it would "break" it in the sense that you can have freedom of speech, but the corporate platforms would be where most people are, so you lose the freedom to be heard, so to speak, if the corporate platforms start introducing algorithmic timeline manipulation, or start defederating many instances and blocking many individuals.Sure the Fediverse would persist, but there would be a propagandistic pressure from the outside, to make the fediverse appear unappealing.

Most people fall for the propaganda, true. Fediverse is federation and freedom to some. To others, it’s the freedom to control the narrative and isolate (cut people off) from themselves. I see little different with the scenario you described and I think it’s highly likely. But then, nothing new.

@otso @amici @bushgrad suppose one of the big companies begins supporting ActivityPuband it ends up being the biggest instance, so you end up connecting with a lot of people from therethen the company decides it would be more profitable to do stuff that makes it impossible to stay in touch with these peopleand if you're not really attached to the idea of federation, you might then decide to abandon the smaller instance you were on, in favour of an account on that big corpo instance.cue massive numbers of people abandoning the small servers for big ones, for pragmatic reasons. the network effect.so even if a small instance is free and sovereign, a social network isn't really possible without connecting people. that's what it's for. and a big corporation can do stuff to disrupt that.

@amici @bushgrad the issue is that such a thing will cut people off from one another. maybe newcomers you know and like, unfamiliar with the politics, will effectively not be on the same platform you are.

@amici @bushgrad it won't break it on a technical level. on the technical level, they're just going out of spec, isolating themselves from the rest of the network. but i'm getting more at the politics/tactics of it, and the overall goals, ideals and hopes, on a bigger scale.

@bushgrad @thor 1. Give people social links to a silo larger than the rest of the network put together2. Now they have an incentive to stay connected with the silo3. Break the silo away from the network4. ProfitThis is how Google broke the XMPP community.

@clacke @bushgrad i just think there's some reason to worry here, but the threat isn't precisely known. i just realise there's an overall theme. and it has happened before, to other community-driven systems.

Yes, I agree that it is an important thing to be concerned about and to consider, ways to mitigate losses in connections. It may be simply a matter of people being aware of it, and asking, as we are doing here.
