On the one hand it is quite cool to see #tumblr joining #ActivityPub, and therefore be part of the fediverse, so to speak. On the other hand, many folks were getting upset over big tech companies having a #Mastodon instance due to embrace-extend-extinguish, and I think Tumblr could be doing just that tbh.

@rootfs You're ignoring the worst part of Tumblr joining Fedi: Tumblr's users are cancer

@rootfs What would be the particular reasons that make the wide #activitypub implementation conduct to #mastodon extinction?

@pedromj the idea is generally:* some big company "embraces" the tech and adopts it. in this case, tumblr* tumblr goes "oh that's nice, but we need x, y, and z feature" and then makes custom activitypub thing outside of activitypub (so multiple standards)* keep on doing this until old activitypub cannot compete, tumblr says "sorry, activitypub can't be trusted", kill it off and use their own proprietary thing.Happened with XMPP

@rootfs In which sense happened with #xmpp? As far as I know, #xmpp was destroyed by the lack of users, which fastly migrated to alternatives (much worse, such as WhatsApp). I kept using #xmpp until the last acquitted left. New functions in #activitypub would not destroy it. They will be normally accompanied with reference #opensource implementations. It will be up to the community to maintain servers and users to keep using them. This last point will be the key.
