Motorola produced versions of the 68040 for many different computing purposes. The 68LC040 which lacked an FPU, the 68EC040 which had neither MMU or FPU, and the 68NC040 pictured here which lacked a CPU entirely.

@NanoRaptor Such a great innovation for energy efficiency. I wonder why this hasn't this caught on.

@NanoRaptor Underappreciated is that the NC SKU led to 100% yield after binning.

@NanoRaptor Reviewers concluded that, whilst cheap, performance was hobbled by the half-rate front-side bus

@NanoRaptor I always loved the drop-in CPUs that snugly fit in the middle of these.Intelâs whole thing where the CPU sat in the corner of the socket, with the L-shaped FPU surrounding the other two sides didnât really have the same cool factor.âWhere does the tiny 68k go? Thatâs right - in the square hole!â

@NanoRaptor the 68NC040 was exclusivity produced due to a bug in Packard Bell's misconceived competitor to the PowerMac 6100/486, which was meant to have an optional 68040 to run existing Apple software, but was inadequately tested early in production and needed this blanking adapter to run without the add-on CPU.
