Fuck 'overlay scrollbars', fuck gnome, fuck the gnome developers. Fuck GTK, I can't wait for something else that respects users to completely replace it.

If anyone is wondering why I'm writing like this, consider my experience as a linux user of 15 years:Something like two thirds of linux desktop software is built on GTK. If you use linux on the desktop, you're stuck with it.Since around 2011, the gnome project have made a concentrated effort to eradicate custom themes.I'm OCD and require my desktop set up in a very specific way to feel comfortable. I want my custom colour scheme, controls appearance & behaviour. 1/? continued

Around 2011 they released the first version of GTK3. Common applications I was relying on started adopting it and they looked like crap in my setup, so I had to make my own GTK theme to get them to fit in properly. So late 2011, I made my first version of my custom GTK3 theme and things looked good. But then a GTK3 update came out and suddenly my theme was broken. I fixed it.2/? continued

Then this became a repeating cycle. Every minor version increment of GTK3 broke themeing, often to the point that I had to throw out everything and start from scratch. Over a period of 5 years I totally rewrote my theme probably 5 times and wasted a lot of time struggling with the extremely bad gnome documentation and relying on guesswork and intuition and reading source code to get stuff working. But I fought on through it and kept my desktop looking basically how I wanted.3/? continued

But in addition to this the gnome project started making other headaches for me. They started removing or threatening to remove config options from GTK that I used. They also started adding misfeatures with no way to turn them off.4/? continued

They added this feature "overlay scrollbars" where the scrollbars fade in/out when you mouse over them. This triggers my OCD a LOT, I find animating things in the corner of my eyes very distracting and upsetting, and generally hate stuff that moves or changes and reconfigures itself without my explicit permission or interaction. From what I read it seemed like they planned to make this feature compulsory and non-optional in GTK3 but backpedalled on that.5/? continued

Now from what I'm reading tonight, in GTK4 it is apparently indeed be compulsory and you won't be able to disable it anymore.Apparently they also made this thing "libadwaita" which, from what I understand, further makes it a huge pain to use custom themes. idk but everything I read about it sounds like REALLY fucking bad news. I don't have personal experience with it yet because my distro is a bit outdated (leading to my next point)6/? continued

When I started using Linux in 2005, I was excited for software & distro updates. I looked forward to trying out new software and enjoying improvements, new features, etc. After 2011 GNOME killed that for me. I dreaded updates.I knew that there was a 100% chance that* features I relied on would be removed* software I liked would be redesigned to be a horrible experience* my theme would need fixing or rewriting YET AGAINI naturally started updating very infrequently.7/? continued

Now I'm running an EOL ubuntu release (21.10) and my next update will probably put me face to face with gnome's next scheme to fuck up my desktop and ruin my custom setup all over again. If you're thinking "just don't use gnome" you don't understand, I don't use gnome. I haven't touched the gnome desktop itself since 2011 and you couldn't pay me any amount of money to touch it ever again.Gnome caused me all this trouble entirely through GTK.8/? continued

I'm disabled and my computer is in some sense my sanctuary/safe space where I relax and feel at home.I don't know if anyone will understand I hope someone will, the constant trouble gnome has caused me in keeping it the way I want, the one place where I feel at home, has been genuinely deeply distressing and upsetting and has felt violating to me.9/? continued

They really didn't need to make themeing and customisation impossible, none of this was necessary. GTK2 managed it just fine.It feels honestly deliberate. Every article about these issues (and other issues) written by gnome developers reads that I've seen in an extremely condescending "you will do it our way or not at all, we know the best, you can't be trusted to choose" kind of way.10/? continued

So if anyone wonders about my rude comments earlier, please consider my experiences that are reflected in the emotional expression. If you are a developer of graphical applications on linux, please consider choosing an alternative over GTK.Thank you

@dusthillresident it seems like your sentiments re: GTK are pretty commonly felt among developers, these days. Many projects are moving away from GTK - not least of all Pop!_OS. It's my understanding that they will be using the Enlightenment Foundation Libraries as an alternative

@fcktheworld587 This is really encouraging to hear! I'm hoping really hard for alternatives to gain momentum and support, GTK has had an unfair level of control and influence over Linux desktop for too long.Rather than acting like a member of an ecosystem, they act like they own it and that everyone else needs to follow them and implement their ideas.Stark contrast from Qt for example that has long aimed for interoperability and integration in different environments
