Overconsumption is a big issue already globally and 'world events' like Black Friday doesn't help a bit.. :blobcatscared: Fashion influencers are getting more crazy than ever, online ordering and payments can be done with a single click / tab on the screen all for the goal of selling more and more.I'm not gonna participate in this madness and I hope you also won't or at least buy something locally to support the small stores instead of Bezos with :amazon: for example..

@stux we used Black Friday to stock up on the things we already need (cat litter and food)—not the things we want. There’s no need to keep consuming like this, especially when supply chains are already stressed!Somehow there are shortages of eggs, of medicine, of baby formula, but we have plenty of TVs on sale and ready to ship..

@stux The only thing I got today was a discounted course for a friend who couldn't afford the registration fees, so not much consumption on my end either ☺️

@stux Overconsumption???I still have a t-shirt offered by a climbing magazine when Reinhold Messner made the first ascent of Annapurna.I checked the date on Wikipedia: 1985.Alas, I don't fit into it, but it's perfect for my wife.

@stux Black Friday is gross vulgar crude. Some foreign store introduced it in my little country last night and it was awful…I watched it on YouTube. 😢

@stux I don’t understand the reason for more, more, more! We have so much stuff, and I’m really shopping towards need versus want past few yrs. My grand children are not getting “stuff” from me this year,I told my daughter I want to buy experiences, movie gift cards, the trampoline place, and things to do. I always give $$ for their education to be put away, the last number of Xmas it was pyjamas and something small along with ed $$.Ed $$ for Bdy and needed clothes have lots

@stux I'm all for shopping local. but when local gets their products from the same online big guys and charges 3x as much, the bottom line is...it's my money and I need to make go as far as it can. I really hate buying online, but the local costs are getting prohibitive.

@stux I have a loved one who works retail and if I weren't already deeply opposed to Black Friday I would be after seeing her near tears at the thought of getting up at 2 AM to get screamed at for hours by entitled shopaholics whose lust for cheap garbage overwhelms whatever intelligence and human decency they may have started with.

@stux I came from México and when I witnessed the first black Friday I thought it was just very weird. I usually just save when I want something and buy it any day when people are not stumping over each other. I've been here nearly 25 years and never went to any black Friday the idea doesn't appeal to me at all.

@stux same.I stay away from everything BF. Want nothing, need nothing, buy nothing. They are essentially warehouse overstock or end of line clearances and here in the UK, a Which survey found that a massive 99.5% of products surveyed over a 6 month period were cheaper at other times.I would only consider a purchase of something essential that I truly needed, I.e. dog food, toilet rolls, etc if they were cheaper, but that’s never the case.

@stux Every year, I buy Christmas presents but, I buy from charities that I love and trust. It's a time to remember the good we can do by using our spending power to do some good in the world. I don't buy from the smiley mouth/ arrow thing.

@stux We have some great little charities, such as the Fox Project. You can give people the gift of sponsoring a fox cub and they send regular updates about them until they are released. Hillside Animal Sanctuary allow you to buy a gift of hay, carrots, straw, special feed etc. The recipient gets a gift certificate and you can also sponsor animals too. This is how we give Christmas presents 🐈🐕🐇🐁🐄🐖🐐🐑🎄

@stux Or just boycott Amazon etc completely. Been doing it for years, it's honestly not that hard. Like other changes to consumption patterns, it takes a small adjustment, then you just wonder why you bothered using it at all. Fro example, here's an ethical and sustainable place to get audiobooks:https://xigxag.co.uk/

@stux I totally agree, it’s a wasteful nonsense, especially in Britain where it has no relevance to anything. It’s an American tradition, something to do with Thanksgiving, isn’t it?

@stux Overconsumption has been an acknowledged problem for a half century—the damage is done—not advocating overconsumption; just saying that no matter what we do now won’t matter one iota!

@stux Yeah! We used to do Buy Nothing Day events back here in Finland with our environmentalist group twenty years back already. That was at least a decade before the Black Friday catastrophe was imported here, too; it was mostly against the start of the Christmas overconsumption season. I kind of long for that innocent time :D
