@thor for the recordthe yard doesn't actually get used outside of particular areas, mainly the lines on a football field and in the construction industry when ordering deliveries of loam, dirt, sand, concrete, gravel, etc (in which case it is cubic yards, and they are usually estimated by eye, not actually measured out)

@thorThe right side is so satisfying, while the left one triggers my pseudo-OCD at every level.

@bitterblossom it's not the most common unitfor rough approximation purposes, i just equal it to the meter.1 yard = 0,9144 meters "close enough"

@bitterblossom and since 3 feet is 1 yard, i roughly approximate a foot to be 1/3 of a meter.

@thor it's close enough an approximation for anything that doesn't need actual accuracy.the important thing to remember is "five tomatoes" - 5280 feet to the mile

@thor Playing devil's advocate, the metric system isn't flawless either. For one, why is it called a Tonne and not a Gigagram, if we're using prefixes everywhere else? Also, Celsius is the one defined around freezing/boiling water. And what's it even mean that "logical scaleat which zero is the base level"? What's a base level? Sounds more like Kelvin to me.

@thor I like this. Stealing it for use in my math instruction course. I am always baffled by how the US is one of only 3 countries in the world that uses the Customary system. It makes no sense.

@drduek they're usually known as Imperial measurements, or the Imperial System.somewhat paradoxically, despite America's desire to liberate itself from the English, it kept the English system of measurement, and didn't adopt the French system.the French were very supportive of America.

@thor The text I use for my class calls it both the Customary or English system. I've never understood our reluctance to use the simpler metric system. So, I have to teach both.

@drduek @thor https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_System_of_UnitsThe International System of Units, known by the international abbreviation SI in all languages and sometimes pleonastically as the SI system, is the modern form of the metric system and the world's most widely used system of measurement. It is the only system of measurement with an official status in nearly every country in the world, employed in science, technology, industry, and everyday commerce.

@antipode77 @drduek they teach this system in school, even in America, but practical concerns prevent it from being adopted in day-to-day life. too much momentum. even if you teach your kid, it won't work.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRnuY1Vao0o

@antipode77 @drduek if America was more dependent on other countries, maybe it would adjust, but for the most part, save for a few exceptions, it can pretend that the rest of the world doesn't even exist. a.k.a. island mentality:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Island_mentality

@thor @antipode77 @drduek The only time this was ever a problem for me was finding high quality metric drill bits, which are harder to find in North America. I found them eventually but I had to pay a premium.

@cirno 😆 gigagram sounds like "i am very light yet heavy at the same time"the spelling dictionary on my computer appears to think "gigagram" is a real wordif i type "giggagram" it gives red squiggles. so i guess it's actually a valid way of saying "metric ton"
