Some people say, "Jack Dorsey's #Bluesky is going to crush the Fediverse!"It's my view that Bluesky is vaporware.@darnell agrees with me.As he mentions in this blog post, there's rival protocols to Bluesky -- some that do that same thing -- that were introduced this year, and they already have adoption.Meanwhile, Bluesky was announce in 2019 -- and nothing's been built.Where are the Bluesky apps? https://darnell.day/where-are-the-bluesky-apps-rival-protocols-have-them

@atomicpoet @darnell I mentioned to him on Twitter some time back way before the Musk buy that it makes sense to support federated protocols and decentralize rather than continue to use centralized Twitter. He acknowledged that comment. Have not seen progress but that does not mean it is not happening. Time will tell!

How is it that a bunch of upstart coders with no funding, many who are working on this either as a hobby or part-time, are able to out-hustle Twitter's former CEO? Jack Dorsey has a personal net worth of $4.3B. He could have made #Bluesky happen yesterday. But he doesn't!That's something that makes you go 🤔

@shelenn @darnell Okay, but *if* #Bluesky happens (which I'm skeptical about), how far ahead will Fediverse protocols be? As everyone now knows, Tumblr is joining, and Flickr might follow suit. And these are just with what's been announced this month. Yes, Bluesky doesn't do exactly what ActivityPub does, but the halo effect of ActivityPub is real.

I agree with @atomicpoet and @darnell here, I suspect BlueSky was a PR move to deflect criticism from Titter; oh we're working on that, when BlueSky comes out... yada, yada. If they actually wanted to decentralize Titter, they could have implemented AP within a few months, and kicked off a new round of talks at the W3C about an upgrade that does all the things BlueSky does that AP doesn't (eg Zot). Now it's been spun off and it's rolling on momentum alone. @shelenn
