Imagine you open your Mastodon client and it seems your instance is down. You try navigating to the website, no dice. You check a site down service, or from remote VPN location and it's not just down from your location, it's really down. What's your plan of action from this point forward? How can you best prepare a contingency for when your home instance is taken down?

@projectdp Some people have multiple accounts on several servers. Not just for contingency but also for compartmentalisation.

@projectdp if you're asking literally: have a backup account somewhere else, spin up your own instance; otherwise get some coffee and do something else.

@projectdp Data export options are in the settings. You would need to do this from time to time manually and back them up.Or: be happy that your data got deleted and you can make a fresh start. There's too much data out there anyway.

@projectdp One solution is a server in your own household which peers with at least several upstream servers. Then, if your server falls over, you can restore it from the backups you've been meticulously keeping.

@y3mz @simon_brooke Yes I think it would be great if you could have a simple instance-to-instance sync tool that runs on a job for all your contacts and profile settings.Maybe not reposting your post archive every time to alt accounts, due to spam, but at least backing it up safely.

yes, this is the path. i'd have to dig into #pleroma internals to make this work and build some sort of replicator. maybe ill have it done in year 2028
