Is anyone else @SDF noticing some substantial lags in picking up posts from other instances?I'm guessing it's a combination of holiday weekend and server lag, but I've been seeing it for a couple of days now and if there's something I should do (other than chip another twenty bucks towards the server fund) let me know....

@sarae We're working to make Mastodon better. Federating (to/from) across all instances we're connected with is complicated. The devs are working hard to solve these issues so by being here you are helping to make Mastodon better. We will make it through these times and mastodon will continue to improve. Thank you!

@sarae I don't think anyone expected what we saw on November 4th, but it has certainly created a lot of test cases to see how instances can efficiently interact with each other. Improving those connections is a goal. No network will be absolutely perfect, but we're going to try our best. Thank you for being so patient with not just our instance, but the fediverse as a whole.

@SDF yeah, the combination of chronological sorting and higher latency isn't working optimally rn for me as a reading experience, but I hope/assume some of that is going to work itself out as people get the time to bring server capacity online.I also observe that I can "force connect" with material that isn't showing up here yet by going over and liking it on the original server, which tells me some interesting things about network-mycelium.

@sarae Also, the fediverse is designed to work like USENET does in that no instance will have completely identical feeds. The feeds are all based on connections between instances and the relationships of the community. This makes each instance unique and empowers the users to create their own connections rather than an algorithm. I hope this is inspiring.

@SDF oh, I think it makes a lot of sense, it's just that right now I'm following people but not seeing them. IDK if there's some kind of critical mass of follows-between-instances that have to happen for that to kick in.
