Adium was/is such a wonderful piece of software. For a long time I hoped we'd see a Linux or even Windows version but at this point that's extremely unlikely. I know it's built on libpurple and is closely related to Pidgin but Pidgin doesn't hold a candle to Adium in terms of features, OS integration, customization, etc.

@newt Both Adium and Pidgin, yes. I used Pidgin religiously until about a year ago, in fact. Funny thing is that Pidgin has better support for proprietary IM protocols than FOSS ones (Matrix, for instance, has abysmal support)

@tskaalgard welp.. how many good matrix clients do you know? Other than Element and nheko, I haven’t seen any.

In fact, macOS, despite being proprietary and brutally locked down, has an interesting culture of FOSS apps that is frequently overlooked.

@newt FluffyChat and SchildiChat are alright on mobile and Fractal on desktop is getting re-built, I've heard. I want to like nheko but it's incredibly buggy. I support it, though, as a native matrix client that supports voice/video and encryption.

@tskaalgard what kind of buggy? I’ve been using it for a few months now and it seems fine, other than a few interface hiccups. But I’m curious about your story here.

@newt I've had to reinstall it on my laptop multiple times because sometimes I'll open it and the window is 17x bigger than the screen and I've never been able to fix it. I've never actually gotten a voice/video call to connect, and the only version the dev actually supports is when you build it from source.

@tskaalgard wow that’s something I haven’t seen yet. Could be a Qt bug? I dunno.

@newt Disclaimers: "17x" is an exaggeration, but it's too large for the screen sometimes, randomly, when I open it. Also, it's possible the dev has changed their policy; but when I gave nheko a very enthusiastic college try a while back, they did flat-out tell me that most pre-built packages have lots of things disabled by default and that the only way to get these features is to build from source (IIRC voice/video was one of these)

@tskaalgard still gotta test voice and video, but everything else worked just fine. I use the release version in NixOS.

@newt @tskaalgard but it's not going to integrate with your DE as nheko. Fluffy is a flutter app, wich works fine btw.

@JoseMariaHDZ @tskaalgard ah that. Yes, it supports theming. I didn’t think about it as “integration” :comfyjoy:

@newt @JoseMariaHDZ It isn't really about the program supporting theming, it's about the program using a decent native ui library so it doesn't look horribly out of place.
