Interesting to think about how computer literacy is decreasing as time goes on. Future computers will probably be like cars (something only the rare enthusiast will care or know how to maintain on their own) or everything will go the modern Apple route, of designers full on making it impossible to fix or modify them on your own, forcing you to go to a licensed technician.

`pulls up a kirby vacuum salesman brochure`:i run #nixos with impermanence. each time i boot my #thinkpad the system builds from scratch. `/` is immutable except for opt-out file paths such as `/var/log` `/var/lib` just what is needed to function. `/home/$(whoiami)` is persisted via #zfs so files are not lost. no rootkits or malware can contaminate the system. in the lightning strike chance that it tries too, reboot. but i would know ahead of time with the ids/nids setup that runs on my machine.so theoretically while the system is hot the kernel and it's internals can write to the directories it needs and nothing more. the entire system is ephemeral.terribly complex setup. but it's how i roll. now if we're talking #windows i wouldn't know anything about that. i haven't used it since 2000. i've had too many head injuries since that time.

@y3mz @johnbudd1350 @Hoss @JosephNotASlav it's doable on Windows, though not natively, with stuff like Citrix XenDesktop.user profiles get stored on a file server somewhere so nothing you actually want to save gets lost, but everything else gets trashed and overwritten on reboot.keeps your terminal servers clean and lets you deploy loads of copies of a single master image.

i would say that will depend on what one considers file storage. if we're talking `dots` that lives in `/home/$(whoami)/.config/home` (i use home-manager it's a declarative way to code and and build outputs for your config) which is mounted under a persisted volume (ie `/home/ -> /persisted`). i have a daemon that watches home directory structure for changes and moves the files by binary || extension type to subfolders. if i'm downloading linux.isos the program i use dumps it do a spinning-rust slab that gets unlocked via luks when the system boots (provided i have my key inserted). if the machine powers down, luks locks it (fvck that sounds weird) and i put the put the key in my prison wallet or toss it in the microwave.

It's horrifying.
