       I'm not gonna say this on Twitter because it's *too* openly seething and conspiracist of me, but part of the reason I'm mad about the anti-Mastodon pushback is because Mastodon is one of like maybe two platforms in the #TwitterMigration wave I can see credible grounds for doing psyops against

       Mastodon is a social media service so by definition the idea that an intelligence agency or other hostile state-affiliated actor couldn't "compromise" it is laughable — any information is "compromised" if you fucking publish it — but man, it would be just about as difficult and labour-intensive as possible. And the ways it can be otherwise recuperated for capitalism and monetised are so few.If I were a Western intelligence agency considering which social media platforms of the migration wave to aggress against, Mastodon and cohost (platform of gay communist artists run by a workers' co-op) would be my top two. Hive Social (opaquely-funded centralised venture where you have to accept your powerlessness, tolerate everything, and agree to trust the operator even if you have no reason to) is exactly where I'd be trying to send them instead

       @estrapade @Wester_Hare a lot of folk have latched onto the racism as a reason not to come to mastodon, which to be fair, does exist, but the way they talk about it on twitter makes it sound like they think it’s a single moderation team that runs mastodon and not like, a bunch of different ones with various quality

       @estrapade @Wester_Hare racism is absolutely a problem here but unlike on commercial social media, we can actually work to make it better in ways other than begging some corporate masters for crumbs in exchange for ad data, and people aren’t quite grasping this.
