@furgar That isn't "needed", nasa just doesn't have to justify its budget to an owner like news channels do. "We spent 1.5 mill on a vehicle" - boss "that's all we get for 1.5 mill???"Nasa - "Couldn't have spent more?"

@furgar Regardless of your belief in moon landing, there's also the difference in bandwidth to consider. A modern satellite truck is sending live feed at 1080p to 4k resolutions and must have enough power to overcome atmospheric interference and weather. The camera on the lander required 1/5th the bandwidth or less and would not have to contend with the atmosphere. All it would need to be able to do is transmit to a satellite on the same side of Earth the moon was on

@Beefki @furgar Apollo used the Deep Space Network as wellhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_Deep_Space_NetworkThe story of Apollo 13 and DSN is perhaps more important than getting the signal from a Lunar Rover.IIRC, they also used it recently to get communications restored to a misbehaving satellite on the way to the moon.
