One thing many people don't understand about ADHD is that focusing our attention requires an effort of will. Imagine that every time you open and close your hands, instead of it being automatic, you have to consciously focus on each movement, and on switching from one to the other. How much slower and more tiring would that make doing everything that involves your hands? Substitute hands for attention, and that might give you some inkling of what daily life is like for us.#ADHD

@strypey I'm prescribed Adderall, and while it definitely helps with focusing on just one thing at a time, it still requires willful effort to choose what I'm focusing on

@strypey IMO, It takes a developer's mind to deal with AD(H)D: find a workaround.Actually, that's completely wrong - there's not A workaround. There are several hundred thousand. But about age 50, you get used to the idea that your mind not only wanders, but often wanders in an analogous manner to what your immediate task/ concern/ desire is.I don't know if this happens before 50 (I didn't clue if it did), but it made mid-life better. :)

@canusfeminacanis Maybe it's just a case of having had a lot of trial and error to eliminate strategies that don't work for you, and avoidable things that make life harder, and to get into the habit of using the strategies that you've found do work?

@strypey Your post struck two chords with me.The first, is that this describes my ADHD really well. The second has to do with the complex migraines I picked up in 2020 after a nasty concussion.During the episodes, I would go to do something with my left arm... And nothing would happen. Which was absolutely terrifying.Except, if instead of trying to reach for something, I focused on raising my arm, I could, in fact, raise the arm. It took a little effort, but largely it took actually trying to move my arm, instead of trying to do something that involved moving my arm. This has gotten somewhat better, but, well, not all the way.Anyhow, thank you for your original comment about ADHD. I have not actually been able to explain WTF went on with my arm before now, not well anyhow.

@strypey That's certainly part of it. But mid-life brings other cognitive changes, so there's a bit of time where you're still ADHD, but with blips in other functions. Can be a bit alarming. Then, as things evened out, I started to understand that my mind wandered the same way with a particular task. For me, it boiled down to the meaning/ implication of the task. This took out the rand().
