Also while I’m starting fights, I think the Space Marines from warhammer aren’t cool looking at all. They’re too deep in 70’s scifi style, non-functional, the proportions don’t make sense for a human body in most of the art, and they have no ammunition. It’s a fun story and all, I just don’t get how guys look at this shitty kindergarten gun design and silly bell-bottom pant armor and say “woah dude super badass mech armor wow wow wow”

There IS a surprising amount of great art that makes up for it though, they have tons of really cool work that makes up for the shitty, boring, gay designs of the warhammer universe with dynamic action.

A while back I was killing time and dropped by this hobby shop by some airport in wyoming or something, and they had this gigantic warhammer titan model there and I was just looking at it in bafflement thinking “yeah….it’s cool in theory, as a one-off concept, but to put THIS much work into this design feels like wasted effort“. Talked with the owner and it was interesting chatting about it because it sounded like he’d never even considered whether or not it actually looked cool. When you grow up with it you just think it’s cool because it’s the big giant spooky thingSorry man, this shit looks stupid. If you’re a warhammer fan you deserve better looking flagship models. It’s a fun idea, but having this be THE titan design is a waste of a lot of talent

@okuu It’s fun, it’s just ugly and nobody seems to notice. I only recently have everyone trying to get me into this stuff so I’m seeing it with fresh eyes so I don’t have the same “oooohh ahhhhh” that everyone else does. I half wonder if those new aliens are a bid to rectify that issue. They’re a way to weasel in slightly better looking, more competitive mecha products on hobby store shelves in a way that fits the lore. Still not all that impressive but they DO have to ride a fine line and seek originality while fitting into the aesthetic, so they’re trying.

When I told a fren I hated the marine armor he said taking issue with how it works is just like how roasties see anime girls and ask “where are her organs!?!” I don’t buy it, nerd hobbies are supposed to be super autistic and descriptive, you’re supposed to have 400 pages of nonsensical but cool terminology to make it sound like some kind of tech that COULD exist, but then you have official art like this and unless the guy has extensions on his scapula to give him a 6-foot wide shoulder width, the armor doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. (Remember how the star wars naboo fighter did this with R2d2’s head and they had to add it to canon that his entire body was just an extendable tube?)

@WashedOutGundamPilot I can't unsee the bell bottoms now! Look! There's even a tassel on his left leg. It really comes down to the fact that the guys who designed the armor and weapons are some Brits who have never held a rifle before, nor have they ever concerned themselves with military practicality. How is such armor maintained? I don't think I've ever seen art of them with a suit with any form of repairs or replacement parts on it.

@WashedOutGundamPilot @deprecated_ii This is a result of trying to draw models as they appear. This specific illustration is supposed to be a painting guide. Hence the side on pose for both the weapons and the open stance of the body. The models at this time had exactly these proportions owing to them being (at time of publication) 5 years old, produced in the early 90's for 2nd edition, most sculptors were quire amateur and had little access to better skills. It's bad, but it's more a result of teething issues in a world without internet than it is anything else.

@WashedOutGundamPilot There are several things worth bearing in mind regarding Warhammer. It was made by 20 somethings, who loved heavy metal, 2000AD & so on, in the 80's, who were primarily interested in making a platoon level roleplaying-type game. This was more of a creative effort, the company was a private one at the time, the people involved all knew one another, the company was very easy going and happy to have their team do any old shit. There are three core phases to the progression of Warhammer over time. These are Oldhammer (1st & 2nd edition,) Middlehammer (3rd & 4th edition,) and Newhammer (5th and onward.) Each is characterized by significant changes. Oldhammer is a setting founded in heavy metal album art. It's intent was to produce a framework from which to build your own stories, fiction, campaigns and so on. The world it portrays is schizoid, the creators threw everything they could possibly think to throw at the wall in a desperate effort to see if anything they liked would stick. Proportions aren't strictly stuck too, the guys aren't the kind of artists who make that sort of work, they're people who, realistically, wouldn't be producing art as a living if they were born 2 or 3 decades prior. No one really knows what 40k is yet. Every single part of it is still being refined. Third edition kept a lot of the core of Oldhammer, as it began a new era. The game was changed substantially, and after a full edition's run of 4 years, rather than be replaced it was instead simply updated to 3.5.A lot about 40k's visual style changes in this transition. The Goof Vibe is dying out as everyone gets more skilled. The people involved know firmly what they want it to be. Every army that would exist in future is, in some way, present apart from the Mechanicum & Squats. The themes are nailed down. The lore is concrete. There's an interest in producing art that borrows stylings from traditional European art. It wants to look like some old master slaved away to paint it. The people involved are often people who were involved from early on and they've gotten much better through practice and time, 11 years of it in fact. Most of them stuck around because of the freedom they had & their love for what they'd made. Those hyper proportions are still kept for a lot of things, a legacy of the goofy vibe, but people just *liked* it by then. That was the visual style of the game, that differentiated it from its competition. People liked it so much Warcraft & Warmachine both tried stealing it. This was its halcyon era. Half way through it, the company privatized. Rulebooks came out with fewer options, less art, no more painting or terrain guides. People left. 5th edition was much more controlled. The high ups started cracking down on what could be drawn, what was acceptable, what was tolerable, the quality of the rules decayed rapidly as the company tried to sell models by making them over powered. The customers responded with contempt. More people left rather than stick around and see what it would become. The Perry Brothers, for example, who now run the historical games company Perry miniatures sculpted a huge proportion of the fantasy and even 40k range. One of them had his hand blown off by a cannon while working for GW and out of love of the craft, while in hospital, was still sculpting with his non-dominant, and remaining hand. What happens when a project is 20 years old? Warhammer 40,000 was 20 in 2007. People had been born to parents who were already playing Warhammer and reached the age of majority. The people who created Warhammer had read Byron, Homer, they knew their histories of Britain, Rome & so on. They were literate and well-read, they had diverse interests, they were fully developed people. !!People!! born in the 80's and after often are just consumerists. They don't read public domain or historical books. They often don't watch old films that aren't nostalgic to them. They often don't care about anything except whatever version of something is either the newest or most nostalgic. Maybe, if they're especially well-rounded, they watch documentaries on netflix and can name 1 documentarian ( Attenborough. ) As people left Games Workshop out of discontentment, they needed to be replaced. Who would have the interests that would make them good for these roles? People who like Warhammer. People who like Warhammer so much, they won't command a high wage. People who like Warhammer so much that they live and breathe it. The creative team was made, through cutting out anyone valuable, to place its tail in its mouth and start eating. Warhammer became a closed circle, unwilling to be too obviously influenced. Old stories were re-hashed, re-written & plagarized whole sale because those involved were Warhammer Fans. Not people. The illustrations are commissioned for cheap off of Deviant Art (not a joke)All art is official ordered in 3's by old, middle & current era.

@WashedOutGundamPilot @MeBigbrain Here's a secret tip: most titan owners did not pay full price for the awful level of quality control Forge World are known for. Warhammer has had a thriving 3rd party knock-off scene for more than 20 years. But even considering that: most people actually made their own titans until I want to say, 2015, usually via papercraft template PDFs that were circulated online and made by people who played.Titans are often a third of the price from a recaster, if that. I would probably have to pay 1040 Australian dollars for a legitimate Warhound model. My recaster does them for 250. A lot of recasters also offer points programs to get discounts on models. Titans really weren't something you were ever expected to have, though. They were for another game, titanicus and eventually the specialty kit manufacturer Armourcast (no longer in business) produced them for fun. Later on the company that would replace them, Forge World, did their own. On their introduction they were a 'just for fun' model, it served no purpose in games smaller than 3k points (standard was 1.5k) because you couldn't take them without your opponents permission. In 6th edition and onward from 2008, titans and other 'super heavy' units were moved into regular games. This was part of an effort to try and sell huge centrepiece models as the company realized that there was a large cadre of people who were so interested in big, powerful, silly nonsense units that they'd pay an arm and a leg to have them. Since then every unit in the game has had its models made bigger & dumber. A warhound, the longest produced titan, was about 10 inches tall once built. In 4th edition, the largest titan, the Warlord was given rules. It was NOT given a model, you were supposed to build it yourself with junk you had laying around the house, as a fun little project to flex how creative and skilled you were. This changed several years ago when it was given a model costing multiple thousands of dollars Australian. Whilst I like it, I certainly wouldn't ever buy it. Even recasters want 500$ for it.

@SpaceElf Classic cycle. It has some cool bones, at least. Just really faceplanted now that it’s so popular. The designs wouldn’t be that bad if they’re just a small aspect of a niche hobby, now that they’re being forced into a flagship position of the warhammer brand it just ain’t helping.

Warhammer can be appreciated for showing a nifty little thing to point to when you say democracy is for faggots, though. I’m sure this artist thinks a communist space “collective” run by jewish lesbians would be much better at fighting demonic horrors than a world-spanning empire.

@SpaceElf @WashedOutGundamPilot The old realm of chaos and the rogue trader books belong in every gamers library for the art alone.

@SpaceElf @WashedOutGundamPilot I remember a funny story about all this. You know there was supposed to be a 5th great chaos god called Malal? He was very real in the 80s when It appeared, the god of hatred and spite. But It dissapeared for roughly 20 years until It reappeared lately. This was because the Guy that introduced and created this chaos god left GW and the people in the company rather than asking for permisión to use his work, decided to can It until recently when people asked him about Malal and he said that he would be cool with GW reviving It.

@WashedOutGundamPilot @deprecated_ii I am going to say they mutilated humans. The oldhammer statline suggested they are just slightly better by regular old guardsmen.
