The thing where Tumblr and maybe Flickr are embracing ActivityPub is just so interesting to meFor years now the single biggest challenge in launching new social software has been bootstrapping new social graphs for your usersAround 2010 the answer was to use FB and Twitter APIs, but those have got more restricted over time and don't really feel like a safe bet to build on in 2022Having smaller (but still huge!) networks embrace an open standard feels like a HUGE leap forward

@simon ActivityPub is much, much more interesting to me than Mastadon on its own.

@dansinker @simon a thousand times this. Honestly, I feel this more and more every day that Eugen seems committed to *not* fixing some pretty critical (mainly UX/UI) issues with mainline mastodon.

@blaine @dansinker @simon Blaine, I'd love to hear your list of the key UX/UI issues here.

@jeffjarvis @dansinker @simon off the top of my head:On the one hand, @darius's hometown fork is awesome, because it has a local-only timeline. That should be a viable mode.On the other, for most "communities", I don't want to create a new identity, I just want to be able to follow/post into a local timeline like I would a mailing list.At the very least I should be able to sign in to a remote instance with my home id.DMs are a disaster here, as are mentions, but that's mostly client UI

@blaine @jeffjarvis @dansinker @simon @darius I wonder if https://webauthn.io/ helps here. Users should own their identity, not instance admins IMHO.With appropriate safeguards against key/ID loss such as https://darkcrystal.pw/ I'm unclear if Webauthin can act as a DID provider as used in atprotocol https://github.com/bluesky-social/atproto/discussions/363#discussioncomment-4197446

@permagriculture @jeffjarvis @dansinker @simon @darius definitely can, but people need names (to paraphrase @pvh "if your ID is a random string of characters, you've already lost"), and that's a harder circle to square in a decentralized world (without something like DNS/webfinger/email/phone numbers), but I'm digging into some work that I feel really hopeful about rn, more soon!

@blaine Bluesky/Atprotocol are using interrelated forms of ID the handle and the DID https://atproto.com/guides/identityMy dream would be interop between these interesting emerging technologies. So I create my keys on Reticulum/Sideband. I can use these keys to create a handle that's compatible with Atproto & Mastodon. I can authenticate with these services via webauthin which queries my local keys.My friends keep these keys safe through https://darkcrystal.pw/@jeffjarvis @dansinker @simon @darius

@jeffjarvis @dansinker @simon @darius I think all the rest of my issues with Mastodon in particular are just polish issues. One thing that's not clear to me (because I haven't looked 😅) is if the webfinger profile stuff is in a place to support having one ID that can provide multiple "aspects"; e.g., I don't want to have separate IDs for my pixelfed and my mastodon, and I don't (normally) want to subscribe to others' pixelfed feeds from Mastodon.(How's that phenotype post going @danhon?)

@jeffjarvis @dansinker @simon @darius @danhon (historically, this was the whole *point* of webfinger, but I think some ideas got lost along the way)
