I'm trying to think of large websites/services apart from Tumblr and Flickr that could conceivably (practically and politically) implement #ActivityPub and become #Mastodon interoperable.PinterestRedditSoundcloudVimeoDiscordDeviantartBehanceAny obvious ones I've missed? How would people feel about them?

@john I doubt Reddit would. They’re all about the ad dollars nowadays. As a link aggregator, they’re fine with you going to other sites as long as you post it to theirs.

@john Podcast list/bookmarking app! Even non self-hosted podcasts, eg. podcasts on Spotify, Google Podcasts etc would usually have RSS — idk if that would make it easier to implement ActivityPub though, as I'm not familiar with it.

@Sanlear I agree, it seems unlikely. But they might see a chance to nab some users from Twitter.

@john best look into some things that creep into discord before opening that door

@john This would be a good time to with people leaving Twitter in droves. Oddly, I’ve seen more articles about Hive as a Twitter alternative than Reddit, despite its size.

@john Danger: companies adding proprietary extentions to ActivityPub, in their own version of "extend and embrace". (This is how google killed XMPP, a federating chat protocol.) If multiple commpanies attempt that, you get a mess of competing almost-the-same-but-incompatible features, and if the protocol doesn't get killed entirely, it becomes enormously complicated, and far more difficult to learn and maintain than otherwise.

@OldDetroitPunk I don't use Discord, so I don't know! Reddit could be a big problem too. I think they could both solve it to a certain extent by using subdomains and separate instances.

@john it depends of the data loss and the ads. we dont want them to bring ads here and we dont want them to use our post to show ads with them.

@john with tumblr another problem is the quotes. only misskey has quotes. but tumblr has them chronological like a normal person would and missjey has them in reverse like twitter

@calotriton I discussed this earlier in this thread with someone else; my guess is they’ll serialise them into long single posts.

Having lots of reachable content is good, but recommendation systems also need to improve and manage information overload… like the for profit incumbents systems but less self serving and more collaborative.

@john I'm opposed to Pinterest on the grounds that it has no original content of its own to contribute. It's already the scourge of Google image searches, taking traffic away from creators and directing everything to Pinterest.

@john Tiktok?hear me out! Tiktok is known for being annoying especially among the uh “older demographic” but there are thriving insect and reptile keeping communities and some great short form science content creators who are worth it— consider—
