There have been many questions about server blocking #fediblock On Mastodon.world we don't block many servers (yet). I don't block a server because other instances do.We block a server when they host many accounts which breach our rules, and no moderation is done against those accounts. If there's a server you just personally don't like, you can personally block the domain for your account.1/2

I have now made the list of blocked servers public, then can be viewed on the About page. The servernames are obfuscated, to not be 'advertising' them. But if there's a server you can't seem to reach, you can check the list, I'm sure you can make the match. If you think your server was blocked but it shouldn't, mail us at info@mastodon.world.2/2

@ruud just out of interest is it possible to "unblock" a server for yourself as a user that was blocked by the instance?Thank you for your work!

@arturN No, that's not possible. When someone thinks a server was blocked in mistake, they can contact us. If a user wants to see posts that break our rules, they need to migrate to another server š

@ruud very glad to see this stance.I was saying the other day that I think server level blocking is a potential risk to the fediverse, and unless a server exists purely to spread hate, illegal content etc... then server/domain level blocking should be a choice made by individual users, rather than applied server wide because admins have had a falling out about something.Happy I chose this instance! š

@ruudAwesome, I see you've filled out all the reasons. I see many servers not providing the block reason. And that makes it hard for me to verify if I should block when looking at that. So thanks! And good job!š

@ruud @marathon0 @arturN > Imagine if every user had to to that themselves...This is, precisely, the main point of having those tools: to let the users decide whether they want to see or not content from other accounts/servers, even muting whole instances with one click.

@ruudThatās part and parcel of being a user. Mastodon allows an individual to block individuals and/or instances. Thatās the way it should be done. Iāve spent the time to rid my timeline of the ātrashā I donāt wish to see. Took a bit of time, but it was worth it. @captainepoch @arturN @marathon0 What I'm trying to say, if 8 persons have almost a day job looking at the reports, how do individual users keep up with that? Also, most people don't want to see all the misery and block that themselves. They want a safe place. They read our rules and choose this instance (or choose not to leave). Anyone who wants an 'anything goes' instance and decide for themselves, feel free to migrate.

@ruudWell, when I get my instance up, any other that uses blocklists will not be federated by moi. The entire purpose of this ecosystem is to federate and NOT to be a single entity or walled garden. It dissapoints me to see admins that donāt get this. Let users have the editorial power, weāre supposed to be adults here. Iām on a much larger instance than yours and if I can keep up with the spam alone, then perhaps your volunteers arenāt all theyāre cut out to be. LOL@captainepoch @arturN

@ruud @arturN @marathon0 > how do individual users keep up with that?I've been 4 years in the fediverse and I have muted and blocked accounts when those users bother me, it's one click, man...> Also, most people don't want to see all the misery and block that themselves.Yeah, sure. Take a look at Twitter and discover that this argument is no longer valid.> They want a safe place.Under your definition of safe place, of course, because "your server, your rules", bear that in mind. Because under my point of view, isolating yourself from the federated network is like going back to Twitter, literally speaking.

@captainepoch @arturN @marathon0 I don't isolate. I block only very few instances (see blocklist). And yes, my definition of safe, which is clearly stated in our about page. People can decide. Unlike Twitter, they can find any server they like the rules best. So, you do it your way. I do it mine. That's the benefit of federation. Lots of choice.

@newt @hj I think my point was that fediblock is stupid, people should decide what to see and what not, and that censorship is not a solution for anything...But I might be wrong, who really knows...I'm beyond de point to reason with anybody about that, to be honest. To be in the fediverse while having an instance like Twitter is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen.

@captainepoch @hj it's the cultural difference. The people who come to Mastodon often genuinely expect to be catered to. Have you even seen the complaints that Mastodon doesn't have algorithmic timeline? For some, albeit it seems like a minority, figuring out what they do or do not want to read is a problem, and these moderation policies are just an extension of this culture.

@ruudOK I havenāt checked so Iāll take your word for that. Regardless the point stands - Itās not that people want an anything goes instance, but want to be able to censor for themselves. Funny how people that beleive in āFree Speechā like to moderate what others see with minimal oversight and/or transparency.@captainepoch @arturN

@newt @captainepoch there are guides for setting up email servers but they assume you already have background technical knowledge in linux administration. also big tech has fundamentally non-factored independent email by just dumping all of it in the spam bin unless you pay an approved mail sender to do it anyway.

@ruudOnce you as an instance start any blocking yourself, then by definition youāre not Federated. This is the weak point of the entire ecosystem in my mind. If an instance is posting illegal content, let the law deal with it.@captainepoch @arturN

@newt @hj I don't think the cultural difference makes here a dent. Sure, there're a few users that came from Twitter and expect the same heavy moderation than there, but instead of catering to them, we (we as the fediverse) should teach them to not be that stupid.

@ruud IMO, this policy may be cause to defederate from mastdoon.world. A policy not to proactively defederate from hate until it a report is made to the server admin, despite earlier warnings from the communuty, is not helping the community protect itself. Are there any medium to medium-large instances that suspend this server *and others* with this sort of policy? I'd be interested as potential next home. If we don't demand stronger moderation we will lose good people. TY :)#fediblock
