This is infuriating. It's one thing to stop selling a game, but to aggressively prevent people who've purchased and downloaded it from playing should be a goddamn crime. I keep saying buy physical, but what if that's not even an option? This is a tragedy. This is gaming history being erased. #gaming #GamePreservation #DeusExGohttps://www.theverge.com/2022/11/22/23474317/deus-ex-go-embracer-onoma-square-enix-shutting-down

@killyourfm along those lines I hate that any kind of game that is multiplayer-only via a service that is wholly owned and run by the game company without offering any way to self-host is another crime that is preventing archival of games. so much gaming history over the last 10-20 years is disappearing because of such things.

@killyourfm I agree. It's infuriating.I'm really worried about what this means for the future of gaming. What if we start seeing more and more of these issues? We're talking about games that were released over 20 years ago, but still have a huge following even today! If developers start pulling their support in favor of newer titles, it could mean the end of some great franchises.

@killyourfm also a pretty fun game that to the best of my knowledge could simply be played offline. I don't think they're saving any server costs, so my best guess is the studio has been bought and the buyers can't be arsed to care for the Google Play store.IMHO they should just release the latest version for free so it can be archived somewhere.

@killyourfm This along with Nintendo's Wii Shop/old eShop makes a fantastic case against digital purchases. It's this erosion of ownership and preservation. What's funny is I've ended buying a lot more Switch games physically because I know I can dump the games and keep them forever. I do worry about Steam on day no longer being around and what will happen to my library...

@killyourfmThat's why I supported things like GoG while I could. This way I can at least be sure that the game I bought wouldn't be ruined by death of DRM provider or servers shutdown. At least single player part of it.

@killyourfm Unfortunately, many physical releases of games today require online updates or connectivity to function, and often with updates required on day one. There was a lot of complaints over a Limited Run Games / Best Buy release of the Doom Classics Collection for Switch that required signing in to a Bethesda account and having an active online connection to play the game.

@killyourfm I don't understand why they would do this. From what I recall the online aspect wasn't even a huge part of it. If I ever ran a game company that had an online game I would license it so the source would open as the online services ran down. I've been part of multiple game communities now that were only saved by people reverse engineering them and it shouldn't be that way.

@killyourfm it is indeed outrageous. I try to buy retail whenI can (especially for PS4 games) but otherwise pretty much have to rely on digital delivery. Luckily GOG allows you to download games (it's what they do) and so far Steam still allows you to install games you've bought even after they've been removed, but still that's relying on the kindness of strangers, where there should be rules in place to protect customers

@killyourfm @testman Linus and Luke from Linus Tech Tips often mention this in the WAN show.I think it falls in the same category as companies build some smart device like a light switch or bulb which only works whit their cloud service. When they fail and/or go out of business you have e waste. For games it's less e waste these days but more of history. The playstation 3 is still working fine today, I wonder how this will turn out for the new consoles in a decade or so.

@killyourfm IMO there needs to be rules in place to force companies to maintain access to digital goods at the very least as long as the store front the item was purchased from exists or face penalty of issuing refunds to the customer if the game they have purchased becomes inaccessible or unplayable. Additionally if a company no longer wishes to maintain remote servers that an online only game is reliant on then they should be forced to open source the server code or issue refunds.

@CyborgZeta @AmonTheMetalHead Yea, consider that consumers have had the ability to vote with their wallets completely removed on PC. Where does that leave us? It's a really crappy situation to be in. Look at Steam. I think we trust Valve enough to stick around, but what if they don't? Do we trust this business to preserve all our digital purchases for us once their servers are dead and gone? What GUARANTEE do we actually have?
