Do you think voting should be mandatory?

@Dingfelder under a mandatory system, who will be punished most for not voting? Vulnerable people, people in poverty. It will be just another poor tax. In the Aotearoa New Zealand context, it will punishing those who don't want to engage with a settler-colonial system. Not voting is also a statement that the system isn't working for those who choose not to vote.

@stargazer so make a vote of no confidence option, to get rid of the status quo? I agree though that you raise some good points

@Dingfelder will still be a poor tax for those who don't vote. Are you able to find some stat's from Aus about the demographics that get fined the most? And how much the fines are compared to income, ie affordability? And what happens to those who don't pay their fines? In the US context it would mean another excuse to jail black people.Seriously not a good idea. Not voting = a vote of no confidence, so why make it mandatory?

I totally agree with @stargazer here. Criminalizing non-voting is just wrong-headed. Non-votes ought to be reported on more and taken seriously as a political choice, just like votes. Even when they come from ignorance about how the electoral system works, or apathy about the candidates and parties available to vote for, a non-vote is still a protest vote against the status quo.(1/2)@Dingfelder

@DingfelderPeople who care about voter turnout need to ask *why* people don't vote and how they're going to positively address each of those reasons. Threatening to punish people for not voting is a cop out. (2/2)@stargazer

@strypey @stargazer unfortunately a non-vote (while perhaps intending to be a protest vote against the status quo) usually does exactly the opposite - as usually the current politician gets re-elected if turnout is low, so their choice not to participate unfortunately helps perpetuate the existing system.

@Dingfelder I didn't say it was a good idea. I don't think voting ACT or NZ Outdoors & Freedom Party is a good idea either. But I think you would object if I proposed to make it illegal ;) @stargazer #voting #elections

@strypey @Dingfelder exactly, it's a valid choice. Equal to voting no confidence in a coerced and punitive system, but without the harm. But you said it better 😁
