The biggest obstacle to joining #Mastodon is step one: Choose an instance. I suspect that most #Twitter users who would like to migrate give up right there.Meanwhile, some fear https://mathstodon.xyz/@manlius/109383027753990134 that the largest servers account for too much of the whole.What can be done? There are a few lists, but none capture anything like the full range. And it’s a moving target.Would a Wiki be feasible? Freely editable, lightly moderated? Flexible categories. Who would initiate such a thing?

@JamesGleick for the time being, https://instances.social is a pretty decent tool. Instances owners need to feed it, though.

@benwittorf @JamesGleick in my opinion “wizard” tools like instances.social are the best way forward. @TheKinrar has been offering us this amazing resource for years.IMHO all that’s needed is an even simpler wizard, i.e., instead of asking “how many users should be on your instance?” three buttons: small, medium, large, with a link to an explanation of the pros and cons. follow that with a quick keyword search and crap out three instances to choose from, and we’re there.

@benwittorf @JamesGleick they have to feed it on some parts (mainly, moderation policies) but it auto-discovers instances

@benwittorf That tool only has the two variables - language and size. Or is there some bug? I was expecting some kind of questionnaire to narrow things down based on interests and profile or something...

@outeast @TheKinrar is at least capturing these things when submitting an instance. I'm sure it's coming in an update soon, or maybe it's already searchable – haven't tested that, yet.
