Big rumblings in the expansion of the #Fediverse have been happening recently. #Tumblr has already promised to implement #ActivityPub (the protocol Mastodon uses), which will mean you can follow Tumblr accounts from here and vice versa. And today we a learning that #Flickr is also considering it! This will be a massive expansion bringing, which obviously carries some uncertainties, but I, for one, welcome our new federation partners. This is the way the internet is supposed to work.

@john Will Mastadon's servers have the capacity to cope with all this new activity? They must have zillions arriving from Twitter too?

@katedegerdon Tumblr and (if they choose to implement) Flickr will be using their own servers for their users, so the the cost will be just the increased interconnect activity. Which is WAY less than if those users joined Mastodon servers directly. So it's a great way to grow quickly.

@raantuva I thought so too, but Tumblr is now owned by Automattic, which is also runs Wordpress.com. They are a forward-thinking and open-source friendly company, so it's a fairly natural move for them.

@kaydubatl Tumblr is actually super-active, they never really die, and I think they've had an influx of many millions. Flickr I don't know about, but a lot of people have accounts there which I suppose they can start using again.

@dch No, I'm pretty sure that's not the case. The influx here is almost entirely from Twitter as far as I can make out. Tumblr has grown very quickly in the same time period, also from Twitter. They are not losing people, they are gaining (possibly faster than the Fediverse).

@john I do hope Flickr does come on board. I recognize my impact on the server instance (in terms of storage) of posting a photo but if I could boost the photo I post on my paid Flickr account it would be vastly better in terms of doing my part keep the strain on the server lower. Same applies in relation to Tumblr.

I've been a paid #Flickr user since Sept 2005, and I *really* hope #ActivityPub support happens.I've always liked Flickr, but the community suffered greatly under #Yahoo's ownership, and right now it feels pretty…empty. Sure, I can (and do) post photos there, but few people see them vs my #Instagram posts; I've been treating it mostly as an archive, TBH.Being able to share photos (sets/albums?) via ActivityPub would go a long way towards making Flickr relevant again.

@john Excellent!A while ago I renewed my Flickr Pro sub and have been posting my photos (mostly iPhone 12 Mini) and actively trying to pester everyone to come back and discuss things in the group discussions – all the discussion areas stopped dead a few years ago about the same time, but we can revive them, we have the technologleogolgly Here’s one of this morning’s pics, so you can all find me on Flickr and chat and stuff:https://flic.kr/p/2o1Ry8M

@pammystarr @katedegerdon @john That already exists: https://masto.host offers managed Mastodon hosting ($40/mo for ~500 users, seems a bit high but not unreasonable to me), but right now they are so swamped they're not taking new subscriptions. Heck of a problem to have as a business.I do have some questions about how well Mastodon (the mainline server) scales, and if there are opportunities for optimization that could make managed hosting cheaper per user.

@kadin @pammystarr @katedegerdon Other implementations of ActivityPub are more efficient, so I understand. Pleroma for one.Still, I think masto.host offers a good deal, and their support is top-notch.Toot.io also offers managed hosting, but it's starts pretty high: https://toot.io/mastodon_hosting.html

@gabbothefox It will work like any inter-instance connection. Follow someone at Tumblr by sticking their handle (e.g. @johnconway@tumblr.com) in the searchbox at mastodon.world, click follow, and done: you're following them.It should be virtually seamless.

@john @kadin @pammystarr @katedegerdon I think Pleroma is the way to go. Its Elixir-based scalable architecture, design and compatibility surpasses Mastodon, but it does need more love on the web UI side of things. The Metatext app connects seamlessly to it as well as Mastodon.

@Zeugs @coty No, the federated timeline is just the people everyone on your instance follows + their boosts.* It's a tiny part of the Fediverse, and will be essentially unaffected.* There is an exception on some servers, which run relays.

@LillyHerself Personally, I don't think it's a problem. The Fediverse provides the options without locking anyone in, is people prefer a commercial option, fine? And let's not get too starry eyed about how instances are run, they need money too. Paid-for is an okay model in my opinion.

@john @mike the plugin just works. I installed it on a test site a couple of days ago. I was able to follow the user on the WordPress site from my masto account. And publishing posts and pages showed up on the timeline here. Replying from mastodon showed up as a comment on the blog. It's not perfect, alt text on images doesn't come over, but it's a good start.

@john both #flickr and #tumblr are profit making entities I believe so I assume they will want to monetize the investment into #activitypub somehow. I'm hoping this doesn't mean insanity like "sponsored toots"

@john the most exciting thing for me about masto was the lack of corporations. the idea of talking to people, not influencers and important people.I’m glad you’re important people and enjoy it. I am not and want nothing to do with people who are any longer.be well, but we don’t need to talk.

@sydneyfalk Great thing is you can defed and not have anything to do with any of this, right? Also, when someone comes up to me and says I've got something to say to you and then I'm walking away and ignoring you, it doesn't feel like a very human interaction, you know? I kinda just feel shouted at.

@john my question is how #Tumblr posts will appear on other #Fediverse readers. Tumblr’s most salient feature is quote-blogging in a descending orientation, which No Fediverse apps currently have as a feature (#Misskey has quote-blogging but only in an ascending direction). #reblogging #quoteblogging

@john This is Reddit gossip so take it with a *very* large chunk of salt, but there are claims that:> The founder of Pleroma, Lain, programed Pleroma to be harder to block from other instances than a comparable Mastodon Instance. Those blocked Pleroma instance Admins tell me their posts sometimes get through to the Mastodon servers.Source: https://old.reddit.com/r/Pleroma/comments/yu8xof/pleromas_rebased_fork_vs_akkoma_fork/I don't know what that means from a technical perspective, though. How is an instance "hard to block"? 🤷‍♂️

@john Top reason is that Pleroma had a prominent TERF involved with development for a while, so the Pleroma community self-selected for people who are ok with transphobia. (Discussing this often attracts sea lions who claim that technology is neutral, bemoaning cancel culture.)For people who like the technology but want a community that might enforce a code of conduct, consider the hard fork Akkoma instead: https://coffee-and-dreams.uk/development/2022/06/24/akkoma.html

@john tumblr used to be the go to place. I welcome it, but so far we have a wonderful community and some people have cliques and shut people out and cancell them. Already Twitter digressed to this. For example someone could make a mistake and they cancelled them. Bullied their followers not to follow. Making them lose numbers, despite any apology all over using a Hashtag

@john I’m having hard time wrapping my head around it - Tumblr is centralized—does it mean they’d open it up and make it federated? Otherwise, they’d be like, say, Gmail, right? They will be able to exchange messages with Mastodon, but would remain centrally controlled. Flickr too. So, beside cross-communications, what are other benefits of it all?

The problem is when big fish decide to add there own shit to it like Microsoft or Google. That's why we need easy to use cross-platform packages to give the people their own instances.

@john Honestly, the Fediverse and the concept of a decentralized economy is exactly what I've believed that the next-generation of the internet was always gonna be. Web 3.0, or whatever you wanna call it. That being said, sucks that the perception of the decentralization of money has taken a huge hit with crypto scams. I hope we can learn from it and grow.Super happy to see Mastodon get the attention it deserves. Now we gotta tear down Reddit.

@john I was around near the start of The ARPANet and I see this possibility as true to the Internet's initial intent, just as you say. Then, I would describe how the network functions, generally and very often the response was, "Now, why didn't I think of that?" Packet networking was an idea which just clicked. So was The World Wide Web. And if we're lucky, this distributed model will replace for profit social media.

@john@sauropods.win There's not really any "way the internet is supposed to work". The internet can be used in innumerable ways. But I definitely think a movement towards federated content from independent, self-hosted instances is a huge win towards decentralizing the net and healing the internet from how oligarchic it's become.

@john @rsalas @kadin @pammystarr @katedegerdon just poking around, it seems like there is a fair bit of toxicity floating around and emanating from the Pleroma initiative and forks. It doesn't seem like hitching the Mastodon community's technical fate to that codebase and development community would be very healthy.

@john I’m actually really excited about #Tumblr implementing #ActivityPub! I’ve been on tumblr for ages with various blogs, and have followed the #Fediverse since 2017 when I started getting interesting in #IndieWeb and other federated protocols like #beakerbrower

@admin @p @john Without access to the code I'm speculating, but from the docs I don't think "un-blockable messages" is how it shakes out.It appears that Revolver has a single, distributed DB with content split across its nodes (strong whiffs of FreeNet!), but at the edges it exposes an ActivityPub-compat LitePub endpoint, to interop with rest of Fedi. It also promises content filtering of what each node propagates.A Masto admin would treat that LitePub endpoint like any other instance.

@bot @skyfaller @Richstjr @john I think the phrase is necessary to remind us that trans are human beings. Even the most conscientious of us need these repeated corrective devices so that we remember the concept. People are capable of changing their minds with enough correction, right?Trans rights are human rights.Trans are human.

@dch @john Also, is anyone considering the fact that the entirety of Tumblr's culture is built around quoting and adding onto a post, something you deliberately can't do on Mastodon (or most of the Fediverse). How is that going to go down?It may depend on whether the ActivityPub integration results in a two-way posting situation or just a one-way "subscribe" situation but it still seems like an uneasy match. I'll believe this is happening when it actually does

@dch @enchantedsleeper I have thought about it, and actually said a few weeks ago it wouldn’t happen for this reason. But they have been thinking about this for a weeks too, and I doubt they’d commit without having some sort of solution. My guess is that they will serialise the whole quote-thread post as a single one.

@enchantedsleeper you can’t interact with individual reblogs in a thread the tumblr app, unless you click on them and open them individually, right? Links in a serialised post would have the same function.I agree it’s not all that obvious, but the more I look at it, the more I think serialisation can work well enough. Of course if you want the full experience, having a tumblr account would probably work better.

@john Without thinking about it for more than a few seconds, just including an advertising image in every, or if they're feeling "generous" every n'th message published would enable ads to get out. You can be sure of two things, 1) they're not doing it out of altruistic motives; and 2) they have people way more imaginative than me, who've spent way more time thinking about it than I have, to work out how they can make money out of it.

@john Right; I think it would still be kind of janky as an experience unless you had Tumblr, but that's true of other platforms in the Fediverse. But I'm also thinking about the culture clash and the fact that most of the Fedi doesn't have quote functionality by design. And I think that could potentially be a bigger barrier, not logistically maybe, but to whether there would be any merit to Tumblr being on the Fediverse or whether they'd just be defederated by most instances.

@tmmj No one will follow “tumblr”, they will follow individual accounts. Including ads in individual people’s posts like they put them there would be a pretty insane move (both from user point of view and an advertisers point of view). I really don’t think they’d do it, and it would get them defederated pretty quickly from a lot of places. They make money by monetising Tumblr like they always have. ActivityPub gives them a competitive advantage over other platforms (like Twitter).

@enchantedsleeper I don’t agree with the no quote-toot decision, and I’m not sure how many instance admin consider it crucial. (I think something else could have been arranged to address concerns.) I won’t defederate based on that, I can tell you that much.

@john What I described is what Y! Gropes used to do. A boosted toot can have reach. Put ads in toots from people who are popular. Easy.As for defederating, what are instances going to do when their users complain that they can't see Kardashian toots any more? What happens if they bow to that pressure, or just accept $s directly from tumbler etc.? Sure, defederate. I can set up an instance, something beyond nontechies maybe, and talk to myself, but I don't need AP for that.

@tmmj So kinda like declared influencing? Because submarine influencing is coming to the Fediverse if it gets popular whether we like it or not. And individuals can domain block, so defederation isn’t the only option.

Or...... you can toss it aside and hook up a Pleroma server to literally any other web app you like, including the default Mastodon web apps themselves, Pinafore, Soapbox, Glitch-lily etc. You could fork and update abandoned ones like Halcyon or Brutaldon if you're into that. @uncommondepth Like a lot of these computery things, it's actually pretty simple in theory. ActivityPub is just an agreement what format messages to other computers in (it's just text too, you can read it easily enough).Of course in real life it's pretty complex and will break your head if you try to nut it all out.

@john @katedegerdon not sure if this is the case with other IaaS providers, but #GCP only charges for egress. So hosts living within GCP wouldn’t see an increase in network costs as a result of inbound activity from Tumblr. That said, I’ve not yet set up my own server, so I have no idea what kind of compute/storage ramifications there might be. I’d love to see a breakdown of a server’s project costs of anybody felt like sharing what it looks like to host a server and a DB.

@strypey @john @rsalas @pammystarr @katedegerdon Good point, and this is probably the right choice in terms of architecture. The web UI should ideally be just like any other client (iOS native, Android native, desktop, whatever), using the same APIs, potentially not even running on the same server. Keep the frontend, backend, and database/storage cleanly separated from each other.#Mastodon #Pleroma #architecture

@john beware the tactic of "embrace, extend, enclose, and extinguish". Basically, the Microsoft and Google method. Embrace - implement the tech on your platformExtend - Add "enhancements" that become must-havesEnclose - Begin removing competitionExtinguish - Kill the service once you have a proprietary replacement. Or just kill it.

@admin @kadin @john I'm not familiar with any claims that it's harder to block Pleroma. Pleroma does get posts from instances that have blocked it, but that's partially because Mastodon deliberately refuses to make it possible to tell whether your instance is blocked or not.The way Revolver does it is that source-based blocking doesn't work on a P2P system.

@john the thing about this that bugs me is that Flickr already supported independent federation via Atom and RSS feeds, and IMO ActivityPub is not a very good Atom/RSS replacement. Mastodon used to be based on Atom+WebSub, but then switched to ActivityPub not due to any real technical improvement but because it was easier to hack in private posting (badly), rather than working with any of the initiatives that existed to add post privacy to Atom.

@kadin @admin @john > It appears that Revolver has a single, distributed DB with content split across its nodesIf you think about venti plus Kademlia (and then you subtract some of the problems IPFS ran into, though you can optionally use IPFS as a storage backend; it does optimistic fetching of blocks, but their API is kind of a mess), you've probably got most of the design in your head.> (strong whiffs of FreeNet!)I liked the idea but not the execution. I think it could have taken off. I borrowed from Twister a little bit more (when I first got to fedi, I had wanted to build a Twister bridge).> It also promises content filtering of what each node propagates.Indeed. There are two mechanisms for this and a third one planned (we should have had, at minimum, per-user naive Bayes by now), but it is essentially a happy accident of how user-level blocking works. Top-level (that is, user-visible and self-contained) objects are assembled from the slush.> A Masto admin would treat that LitePub endpoint like any other instance. For outgoing posts, sure, they can decline to deliver them to some instances. If you keep following that line, you'll be able to tell why source-based filtering is not going to work. Source-based filtering is already untenable on fedi; existing tools were insufficient when we had just 5k nodes, and we've got (at time of writing, per http://demo.fedilist.com/ ) 17,532 now, well past the point where we're going to be able to do this in a way that doesn't hose the network or bury the admins.:revolvertan: I hope to surprise and delight you. :ocelot:

The impression I'm getting from your explanation so far is that once something gets thrown out onto Revolver, it stays there permanently and nothing can make it go away even moreso than the distributed archival of the current Fediverse.

Why is Atom superior to ActivityPub?Please will you help a layman understand why no one can agree on a common RSS software? How does ActivityPub compare to RASS-Bridge, Matrix, and Norstr used by Minds?

@admin @john The reason I feel that it’s superior is that it’s much simpler to implement (especially in a static hosting context), and the publish vs. subscribe mechanisms are separated. Push is also optional and temporary outages don’t mean a loss of communications overall. Also there are well-established patterns for declaring a feed for a specific resource. And why would one want to agree on a common RSS software? It’s all about having a shared protocol, not a shared implementation.

@admin @john As far as those other protocols go, I only have a very surface-level understanding of Matrix, and I’ve never heard of those other ones. I’m also not particularly an expert at ActivityPub, and most of my exposure to it is Mastodon which doesn’t even implement it quite correctly per the spec — and now everything that implements ActivityPub is expected to be compatible with Mastodon, which really hampers the use of many of its features.

@fluffy @admin I think ActivityPub was developed partly in response to what Mastodon was already doing, so I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, standards are good, on the other hand, sometimes implementation practicalities and moving a little faster are really important.I kinda agree that ActivityPub is a pretty heavyweight solution that probably could have been solved by composing smaller already existing standards, but the ship has sailed.

@admin @john Anyway what I like about an Atom/RSS/Indieweb approach is that there’s many simple protocols which compose together to form something amazing, and they can be done so in ways which allow the user to pick and choose which things they want to use for their own interaction. People above protocols, protocols above platforms.ActivityPub is “easier” to get started in right now (via Mastodon/Pleroma/etc.) but it also becomes an inescapable gravity well. IMO.

@admin @john The one reason Mastodon switched to ActivityPub from OStatus (which IS atom+websub-based) was because they could quickly hack shitty post privacy into the push-based nature of ActivityPub. In the IndieWeb world we have a much better mechanism for that; IndieAuth/TicketAuth grants permissions to message retrieval via bearer token, and this allows for a graceful fallback if the WebSub push fails. The push mechanism is just for reducing latency, not the fundamental method of operation.

@john @admin Yes, but also the great thing about standards is there’s so many to choose from, and in theory Mastodon could support IndieWeb in addition to ActivityPub. Having multiple subscription types (and support for bearer tokens and adaptive polling) wouldn’t be the worst thing.IMO the most unfortunate things about Mastodon’s implementation from a UX standpoint are their assumptions about post formatting, and their insistence on Webfinger as sole form of identity.

@Julieliddellwhitehead @mjgardner Almost exactly the way Mastodon instances interact with each other, by sending the post of the people that you follow to the server you are on. It's very similar to the way email works. New post on Tumblr by a person that you follow -> gets sent to home.social --> you open your page at home.social or your app, the post is displayed. The process is the same in reverse, if you post something, and somebody on tumblr follows you, it gets sent there.

@admin It's inconsistent/difficult to support correctly. It also makes a lot of modes of operation a lot less helpful, like you can't cleanly use it to link to a feed for a specific topic or tag or the like, and it basically tries to distill everything down to an identity at the domain level. Also its mechanism of operation relies on /.well-known which is very obnoxious for a bunch of reasons (especially on a more traditional website).

@Julieliddellwhitehead @mjgardner In many ways, it's way simpler than you'd think. It's basically an agreement on a message format. You could read the messages yourself, they're just text. The agreement is around what sorts of information should be sent (author, is this a reply, date, etc.) and what those things should be called.
