We are now accepting bets in the pool for which brand will be the first to realize that ActivityPub is WIDE OPEN to spam abuse, so Mastodon only doesn't have ads up until the moment that someone stands up a server just to push ad notifications to literally every user on every server.

Literally every one of us who runs our own SMTP servers 5 minutes into looking at ActivityPub: "This looks like email. Don't you think this looks like email? We're going to have email problems on this thing that looks very much like email."

@kwf I was being facetious — as of now, there’s no way to do that AFAIK — but I’d guess just about every other instance would individually ban such an instance, much like some of the pro-hate instances have been banned by virtually all other instances.

@BryceWrayTX @kwf Ah, do Admins have only block lists or also allow lists? With email I can block everything that isn't a contact/domain in my allow list.

@kwf Email really could have kept evolving to provide more useful filters and controls but it stagnated when Gmail sucked everything in.Now the biggest hassle with self hosting email is when Google decides your mail isn’t worth receiving.A better comparison would be with XMPP, because well it is XMPP.

@kwf @pb I don’t understand: SMTP does not require to follow the sender to get their message, unlike Mastodon where I must actively follow those from whom I wish to get statuses…
