@atpfm The history of the term “Toot” relates to an Elephant tooting its nose. AFAIK only in the US is “Toot” referring to flatulence. The developer being European was not aware of this when he originally coined that term. Hopefully that clarifies.

@chidgey @atpfm When I first read from @ajpbradley that it might be used for flatulence, I thought it was a Britishism. 😳 It’s a bit like when British or American school kids learning about France discover that the capital of the Armagnac producing region is a town called Condom. 😂 I guess it’s the least of my worries about social media. 😜

@ajpbradley @ZeKik @atpfm The real point to be made is: 1) Eugene had no idea what it meant when he changed it from Publish to Toot in 2016, 2) When he found out months later he shrugged and didn’t care, 3) After 6 years of being hassled about the name, he’s changed it back to Publish. For me it’s even weirder since I’ve been running Pleroma for 4 years now, and it’s always been called “Post”. :Shrug:

@chidgey @ajpbradley @atpfm Two of the most popular apps for iOS are Mastodon (official) and Metatext. The former calls them posts. The latter, toots.Then there’s “boost” versus “reblog”. 😬 Ultimately, it doesn’t matter that much, does it?

@ajpbradley @atpfm @ZeKik Nope. It doesn’t really matter at all. I find it funny how some people get hung up on a name. I’m far more interested in the interoperability and freedom of choice. To me it’s amazing that a social media platform can mix and match to your own preferences and it effectively works. For example, I’m running two Pleroma instances/servers, and I use Toot! and Metatext clients. I follow people on PixelFed, Mastodon, MissKey from one place. It’s awesome!

@chidgey @atpfm @Natureshadow Well, given that many toots amount to farts, it makes a lot of sense. Especially for shitposting. I think toot should have been kept. At least the German “Trööt!” could have definitely been kept 🙁.
