🚨Moderator Message🚨We have heard the news about Eugen Rochko, and his original intentions. I want to make this very clear:Any Nazis, overt or otherwise, are not welcome in this server, I.E. We will take action against harassment, slurs, Nazi symbols, etc. Please report any actions that may fall into these behaviors. Nazis are not welcome here, and we will have no problem removing them. Do not use this mechanism to silence those you do not like, and use the reporting function wisely. Just because someone is a jerk doesn't make them a Nazi. But if you see their slurs, if you see their symbols, hear their hate, or other statements: report. This is not a space for everyone, it's a safe space. Unsafe people are not welcome here, especially Nazis. We will remove Nazis. Thank you.

@polymathrobert So because re: #1 i wanted the title to be as honest as possible I changed it to be more fair with less chance of misinterpritation it "smells like shit"?As to #2 what I said (*and what was left out of that screenshot) is that we have never had to address CSAM before so we didnt have it in our policy. All changes to our policy require a moderator vote. Several minutes after that question was asked I held a moderator vote and added the CSAM policy to our ToC, which I attached here.@dnsprincess

@dnsprincessSounds like he just removed a controversial instance from the official Mastodon app directory? What am I missing here?For what it's worth I've seen popular instances say they would defederate with other instances that federate with hate speech, and it sounds like this instance does allow that. (Granted it sounds like they have a decent reason to)

But consider the facts:1) he knew very well about snow and his motives2) his first complain 3was basically "you tried to reach out to people and see if you could mend some fences, and only people who invited the communication 3) something about our federation policy which has not changed in 5 years since we joined the list and which eugen has defended many times4) he literally said in his email " “I will take a listing down if it risks endangering the reputation of Mastodon”." which strongly shows he was making a decision based off popular opinion and not the ethics of the situation@dnsprincess

Glad there’s no room for Nazis here, @dnsprincess. The only correct stance! My own humanity and existence are not negotiable so why would I ever accept dehumanization of any other person?If it’s appropriate to ask, is there somewhere I can read more about the news you refer to? I am aware there have been problematic instances in the past but not sure what the person you’re referring to there (and I do know he’s the Mastodon Project originator) has done that’s newsworthy in this context.

May not know much but I do know that trying to read implications into even a fluent ESL speaker's words is rarely of value.However you will do as you wish, as is your right with your instance. @freemo @dnsprincess Based on your own account in that post it sounds more like the controversy was because of not defederating like the other instances were. The issue you had with that troll just seems to have brought attention to it.I'm not a fan of "meta-moderating" instances in this way but it is a policy that some instances seem to be implementing. It sucks, but I can understand why Eugen would want to avoid pointing users to an instance that is getting defederated by a lot of others.

@ScottEvtuch A few reasons Iknow that isnt hte case.. For starters, out policy on defederation has been the same for five years. Second, Gargron knew about our policy and has outright defended it over the course of those five years. So clearly that cant be the reason. Even if it was our reason for not defederating was to protect the lives of our LGBTQ community, so if that were the reason it would still be damnable imo.@dnsprincess

@freemo @dnsprincess Honestly your situation is one of the reasons I remain on mastodon.social and haven't switched. It seems to me like a lot of admins have a really itchy trigger finger when it comes to defederating other instances.As much as I would've loved him to take a stand on this, I can understand that this is probably not a hill worth dying on at this point in Mastodon's growth. Long term I would hope that the joinmastodon list and the official app are basically irrelevant.

@polymathrobert @freemo @dnsprincess Embarrassing bad faith and condescension do some calling themselves a “polymath” and “academic.” The use of nazi as a hyperbolic insult from some engaging in authoritarian behavior, (like censorship) is common and in this case not purposeless, as inflammatory language is a tool to draw attention to the real grievances qoto has. It’s a protected opinion, and thus not defamation. Stop pretending to be stupid so that you can get high on your artificial indignation.
