@arh I agree, bringing eugen's attentions to the public eye will in fact hurt mastodon as a while. This is why I am hoping he decides to at a minimum engage in a conversation before it spreads too far.

That's why I have him blocked since he erased my one-year-old account at mastodon.social without ever having given me any justification for it. @freemo it's a shame what happened to your community. But i can also see the reasons for Eugens decision. The joinmastodon page should only list servers which are well suited for new users. If the instance is blocked by many other servers, the user is going to have a bad time.

@arh @freemo If Mastodon as a project is going to be built on lies, deception, and hate, the reality of those choices will "occur" and reality doesn't much give a damn about our feelings or respect our assumptions of control over it. Reality just "happens."And hoping to use lies and deception to strangle an instance into quiet death and submission isn't very realistic.If that hurts the Mastodon project as a whole, so be it. There were other honest, clear, and open paths to take. Those paths were not chosen. So be it.

@freemo I find the write-up contains (at least) two important points: The history of QOTO (with valuable background info) and Eugen's early and impactful recent reactions. Since the title lists only one, it might be a bit misleading ("clickbait title", as you put it). Wave you considered splitting it into two articles or use title that captures both aspects? @freemo There must be something with my IP - when I tried connection via proxy, I finally loaded the page without problems. WIll read it immedietely!I am not an active user here, more a lurker than anything - posting way more in my native language under pseudonyme in other server (I remember the discussion you had about moderating content in foreign language, so I don't want to clutter this server's timeline _too much_ with Polish toots). But I really do appreciate your common sense approach to the rules and because of them qoto.org was one of the first instances I considered before joining Fediverse.Ultimately, it may be that fediverse will be cut into several bubbles - and if that will happen, I hope my home instance will be in the same bubble as yours.

And I also think that it's dangerous to the Fediverse itself.Especially running a campaign in Twitter while a lot of people are trying to convince their friends to try Fediverse.And I'm saying Fediverse because it'll hurt not only Mastodon.So from some angles it looks quite similar to terrorists tactics.Please note that I'm not saying that removing QOTO from the list is a good thing. I'm all for the freedom of information and against spreading misinformation myself. But it still leaves some bad aftertaste.

Alexey, I find the argument you presented analogous to shooting the messenger. telling a victim to shut up because their speaking up brings harm onto the aggressor is unjust. if denouncing an injustice is labeled as terrorism, but the injustice itself isn't called out, something's fishy. if some action would be perceived negatively, IMHO the best course of action is not to suppress the speech that calls it out so that the presumed negative action can remain unchallenged and unknown, but to get the negative action to stop

if you'd like to talk some more about whether publishing truthful information is ill-advised, I don't mind waiting till you're done with the strawman.nazis exist, are among us, in both society at large and in the fediverse, and they are trying to manipulate us into doing their bidding. I take that's undisputed. now, I can see why some short-term thinking might conclude it's advantageous to pretend this is not the case. I don't think it's good in the mid- or long terms. not only because it's dishonest, and if people are promised something we're unable to deliver, they will be further harmed when it hits them by surprise, but also because, when we give in to their manipulation and allow them to get us to do the injustice they demand, we become their instruments of injustice, i.e., we turn into that which we're trying to keep out.

@freemo @skobkin I've had my fair share of internet scuffles of various kinds over the years, I'll just say this based on that experience and then stay on the sidelines.You should focus on transmitting QOTOs message and stance more than attacking anyone. (E.g What happened, QOTO's stance and how it'll go forward. not who did what to whom) It's what matters more in the long run especially, if the said parties are not going to engage you anyway. This puts the focus on the right things, such as what QOTO stands for in reality and why people have chosen to stay. Making this personal won't gain you anything no matter how right it may feel and will feed your opposition with whatever ammunition they want to make of it. You have no control of their message, so focus on yours free of hostility. @skobkin has a point in that regard. The only way for you to show you're in the right, is to speak and act in such a way.

@dichotomiker @freemo Nazis didn't persecute only jews. They persecuted and killed people that didn't think the way they did. Even people of their own nationality! They didn't care about the truth. Eugene and his staff show the same behaviour when they block people without given them any justification and the chance to defend themselves. I'm not saying he is a Nazi.
