I screwed up and managed to half 20k followers to 10k, because I am an idiot. So... you might need to refollow me. But you won't know this because you don't follow me.#pRoFeSsIoNaL

@GossiTheDog For me it says "Awaiting approval". I had followed your infosec.exchange account.

@merospit he shouldn't have to approve you, his account isn't locked. You may want to try unfollowing/ cancelling the request and following again. His instance shouldn't be getting hammered as bad as when he tried to first import. @GossiTheDog

@fl0wn @GossiTheDog Yes, it was likely a bug in the system. Just letting them know what it showed for me.I cancelled the "request" and submitted it again and it seems to have worked, so all good for me but there could be 10K other requests in the same situation.

@merospit sounds right, I just wanted to add the reply to the thread to offer a work around. If others don't see it in the thread hopefully those who do can pass it along. I used to admin a GNU social instance before Mastodon was a thing, so I think a part of the response has become reflex. Cheers. @GossiTheDog

@fl0wn @merospit all good, cheers folks! Another 2k followers just turned up in the space of a few minutes, it appears to come in waves.

@GossiTheDog I haven't spent much time under the hood in mastodon, are they using still using redis for the queue? That may be the bottleneck. Outside of the twitter waves, the fediverse doesn't normally see accounts with the number of followers that some of you guys are bringing. @merospit

@fl0wn @merospit yeah it's Redis, Postgres etc. This is what it does to CPU during each wave, lol

@GossiTheDog oh fun! Postgres has been the source of some of the bottlenecks on the stack I run but it's usually an issue as an instance ages. I'm not sure if it will be of any help but the Pleroma docs have some suggestions for optimizing postgres performance https://docs-develop.pleroma.social/backend/configuration/postgresql/ @merospit

Up to 17k followers now. Pro-tip if you migrate a large account between instances - it takes many hours for followers to move, and they come in waves. E.g. I just had 2k more appear from multiple different instances in the space of 2 minutes - it looks like remote instances "push" their followers to the other instance in waves.

If anybody is wondering, all my followers automatically migrated over from infosec.exchange. The process is smooth but it takes about a day or two for large accounts, if either server is busy - it knife and forks them across in the background.
