On mastodon the “like” button does not affect the visibility of the tweet. Basically, it only increments a counter that is not used for anything. So, why do have it?

@tiagoI find it very useful when checking art posts. If I like a picture, I'll hit the like button so that artist knows someone appreciates. It's like a virtual high five 🖐️

@tiago It's pretty much the same function as bookmarking, but unlike with bookmarking, the author gets a note and everyone can see how many other people did the same. It's not "like" for a reason. Since Mastodon has no algorithms for visibility and such, the concept of "Likes" is not needed.

@tiago the counter is used as a reference by loosely federated neural networks of electrified lipids to algorithmically determine if other similarly constructed networks reacted positively to the content. The button exists for an individual node in the broader network of fatty voltage lattices to provide verifiable positive feedback to the originating network in an asynchronous, opt-in process.

@tiago In addition to what others said (appreciation), it's also not true. What is true is that you won't see likes of ppl you follow in your home timeline. Which is what boosts are for, and I didn't like that Twitter started using my likes as retweets. But likes on Mastodon do actually increase the visibility of posts in other timelines, afaik.

@spacehobo I don't want anything, I'm asking. If the favorite button is useless (many disagree) it could be removed. I said nothing about having another boost button.

@tiago The star button is useful because it sends a notice to the poster that someone liked the message. This is an opportunity for a follow, perhaps, or a directed interaction in some other way. Suggesting that it's useless because it isn't a second Boost button is a perspective I can't quite understand.

@tiago The implicit idea is communication over viral replication (meme-forming?). Small networks with sparse and local connectivity (the way mastodon is designed) is an ideal architecture for this. I view networks with larger clique-sizes as being more conducive to advertising, PR etc.

@tiago well, to let the author know that you liked the content but that you don’t have enough to say to comment. In a way it’s funny/revealing that you’re assuming that “me liking something” should make that something more visible.

@tiago there aren't algorithms yet. I'd guess they'll come along. Even more, given the decentralized and open-source nature of the fediverse, I'd even guess different algorithms might become available over time. Users might then choose what works better for them. That counter might come in handy some day :)

@tiago I don’t find the original toot where I saw this the first time, and re-reading it I gather that likes only affect the score for the “explore” tab of trending posts. It’s basically this line: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/blob/main/app/models/trends/statuses.rb#L100
