Everything *else* aside, having a government account hosted on a community server seems an awful lot like having a government website hosted at something likebobspersonalpage.com/users/~InternalRevenueService

@darius It looks great that EU has their own Mastodon server running: https://social.network.europa.eu/@EU_Commission/108220439624357877

@zundan do you know how they went about setting that up? Their profile says it's "part of an EU pilot for supporting and using social media platforms based on open-source software"; do you have the language for establishing that pilot program?

@zundan @darius There is even German Government, run by Germany DPOhttps://social.bund.de/aboutMeanwhile rumors are that VW is on mastodon.socialhttps://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vw-joins-mastodon-concerns-over-twitter-mount@VWGroup @cariad_tech Nowhere there is notice that they are on mastodon.social. Just "Mastodon". So I guess someone at brands.town might appear more legit if they start with content.

@mwfc Nice to see that! It's a pity that the .de TLD doesn't have the second level domain reserved for the governments like .gov for the US governments so it is a little bit harder for non-German people to verify that the server is run by the government. We'd always need to verify accounts on generic AP servers by means something outside the AP, like a link from the official web site we know legit.

@egallager I'm sorry I don't know any further than what is publicly available. I guess they are still trying Mastodon out and may stop running it.

@zundan bund.de basicly means federal.deIt is the administration domainhttps://bmi.bund.de is Ministery of Interiorso basicly like gov.ukThe governing of .de helps to clarify a lot for those who are familiar. On the other hand, sad that US does not use .us and mostly went into .com space. Most stuff is a relic as TLDs were not created for everyone and their dog. Our universities are not even in edu space (I know of few)

@SuperDicq @darius That’s actually the norm in #Belgium. The /government/ actually uses outlook.com for official business. Most people don’t realize it because they mask it with a vanity domain. If you do an MX lookup you’ll find most Belgian gov agencies use MS #Outlook. Even the Belgian data protection office! But they are a bit more sneaky-- you only see MS in the headers if they email you.

@expat@mamot.fr @darius@friend.camp Yeah well I mean I wish they didn't take services from Microsoft, but at least the address that shows up in the email client isn't outlook.com so it at least looks trustworthy.
