So apparently #Web3 (at least, what most refer to anyway) is nothing close to the successor to #web2 , It's just a #buzzword for the #blockchain BS that some want to force down everyone's throat. It was coined by the #etherum co-founder in 2014The real #Web3 (as coined by #TimBernersLee ) is called #Semantic #Web , a #framework to add more #metadata to websites so that we have more connected and related websites (sort of the <a href> but with more useful metadata)

@coffee #semanticweb has so much promise! We used it at our startup back in 2009. I'd love to see a resurgence in interest in it, even though my favorite #triplestore and query languages have been supplanted by newer tech.

@coffee A reasonable web 3 would be about decentralization. And it actually was at the start, before corrupted by crypto bros and NFTs.I think it's sad to lose the idea that this is the next step for the web, especially since it's now actually happening - the fediverse being one example. I think the semantic web would fit just fine with the idea of decentralization and federation, but it's not as groundbreaking and not the top level/driving force...

@osiris The idea of the web from the start has been #decentralization, it's not a specific "version".Web 1.0 IIRC is a web of simple html pages Web 2.0 IIRC is the web of dynamic contentWeb 3.0 (semantic web) would be the web of metadata, with pages interconnected as they were already, but with metadata to tell the computer what those pages actually are.None of these imply a centralized view of things, tho big players came by and decided that centralization = good

@coffee Yeah, but since there's been such a strong centralization movement I think it's not unreasonable to make web 3 about (re)decentralization.
