Mastadon folk - we at Stanza have a question.Generally this is a community space that doesn't necessarily want corporate accounts. We want to respect that and not over-burden admins. However, we also know that people do follow our corporate account and we love connecting with possible users that way. How do we do this in the new world? Host our own server? Promise recurring donation/sponsorship in return for being hosted on someone else's? Forget corporate twitter ever existed?

@maggiepint I really like what @dolphin is doing with setting up their own instance just for the organization. It's not quite the same as a corporation but I think the same model makes sense and that way you're being upfront about what exactly the account is.

@alexschneids @maggiepint on our side it was a no brainer to setup our own instance. We already maintain a bunch of infra for the project/org and a Mastodon instance is a tiny amount of extra upkeep. Props to NixOS for making it so simple to deploy and manage systems 🙂 But there are also community instances that will accept corporate accounts as long as they follow established rules. Hachyderm has a well designed policy: https://github.com/hachyderm/community/blob/main/accounts/corporate-accounts.md

@MischievousTomato @alexschneids @maggiepint https://github.com/dolphin-emu/sadm/blob/nix/roles/mastodon/default.nix this is 99% of our setup (remaining 1% is DNS and .well-known entries), could be made 15LOC shorter if we didn't have a split domain setup (account is @ dolphin-emu.org but instance is on social.dolphin-emu.org).
