The 'Digital Euro' idea is cool and all but I'm freaking scared of China-like actions here :thinktink: In my current situation it's almost impossible to request something from the government since they need to have all my financial data including donations etc. I've tried this many times but the people in our gov just don't get it, too lazy or something. No matter what I try they don't get it so I don't want anything from the gov since it's only much work with no results but it's a choice..

@stux it all boils down to who you trust most with your money?Government?Private entities?Crypto? (the crowd)

No offense but if I see how many governments run their ICT projects I'm running away screaming :blobcatscared: Sometimes it feels many scriptkiddies write better and more secure code than any Dutch government for example :blobcatgiggle: Nop, can't say I trust the government with this. No.

@stux how close are we to a cobbled together digital currency with current payment systems (Venmo, cash app, Apple Pay, etc.)?I know there are transaction costs, fees and barriers to entry, but how close are we?

@stux I get the concerns about government overreach, but currently most electronic payment systems are operated by private companies outside the EU. Would you rather have a private actor oversee your data rather that a public institution which is more invested in privacy protection? As for cash, traceable payments really are an effective means to combat organized crime, tax evasion and fraud. There's a lot of documentation about it.

@stux I'm not sure it is a good idea. More and more financial actions have moved to the virtual world, while the use of (and for) cash is diminishing - so in practical terms we are already moving to some sort of digital Euro.Plus, adding an extra layer is also adding complexity, and as old-fashioned engineers know: each moving part is a part that gets broken.(Also: to introduce it because of the crypto crisis just seems weird. 'Hey, guys, this new thing really sucked; let's do it again!)

@stux I've been Lead Developer at Logius (MijnOverheid) for 3+ years and I can attest that this is completely false. As a freelancer my experience is that governments pay for quality, where commercial entities often pay for quantity.

@stux if you think what the Dutch government pays for is bad, then here's the leaked source code for the #Hungarian school administration system that handles everything from grades to personal information of the students and staff.https://github.com/skidoodle/ekreta-src

@stux Most government code in EU is written by "volunteers" for free. When I was in Poland I wanted to join one org like that. They provided code and support for government owned apps

@stux A digital euro would be fine if it has:- proper governance- no way to "invalidate" or "expire" coins (like with the digital yuan)- guaranteed privacy somehowand of course we'd need a physical backup in case of power outages caused by, oh I don't know, some war somewhere for example? If people can't pay for a bread at the baker's while the power is out, it'll jusr lead to a secondary, unofficial and unregulated payment option... oh wait... 😂

The digital euro, like any other #CDDC isn't cool, it's a surveillance and censorship tool for governments. #Bitcoin and #stablecoin baked by $BTC, like #Dollar-On-Chain, is the way to go for honest, non corruptible digital money.@stux
