Thinking about that time I ran across a video titled "why I'm never buying another disposable camera" or something, thinking it was someone who found a cheap point-and-shoot that had a crappy lens and recreated "that look"But no. It was like a 20 year old who had just discovered *cameras*The normal kind. That you reload with film.He didn't know they existed.

@TechConnectify I definitely recall watching my parents go from disposable film cameras to digital point and shoots, and while I think I conceptually *knew* there were reloadable film cameras... even to this day I don't think I've ever seen a fixed lens reloadable film camera in person.

@TechConnectify I don't think I ever saw a "roll" of film until I was tasked with getting a film camera for a class - and even then my mind went to an SLR. So for younger folks treating film as this sort of novelty - it actually may be the case that diposable cameras were just the first thing to pop to mind, and they're easier to find today than reusable cameras of a similar form factor.

@dango_ I don't know when or where you're from, but like... thrift stores are always jam packed with cameras. Disposable cameras generally cost more than twice that of a roll of film (my memory pegs disposable cameras when I was a kid at like $6+ and film maybe $2.50) and were mainly marketed as temporary solutions for people who forgot to bring their camera on a trip or, like, for parents to give to their kids.

@dango_ I also remember insurance companies recommending you keep a disposable camera in your car to allow you to document things in case of an accident - not a bad idea back when you didn't have a camera on your constantly! But there have been very cheap reloadable cameras since... well since always, really. So honestly I think your parents were breaking from the norm

@TechConnectify although, putting my foot in my mouth a bit on that last point, searching "film camera" on amazon brings up lots of reusables... So i'll just chalk it up to human memory and the "feelings" of what is a film camera

@TechConnectify As one born in 98', I guess it makes sense for what one born around year 2000 would remember today. Parents would probably have a digital camera or a polaroid but give a cheap disposable camera for their kids.No idea why disposable cameras caught on though, maybe just them being more sturdy and the film being protected? (I had a reloadable fixed lens point-and-shoot camera)

@TechConnectify I think this is part of why I think what you're doing is so vital! Modern technology isn't the only tech which has value!

@TechConnectify As a 22 year old, this hurts my soul to read. TBH, if I had the space and money I'd love to get an instant polaroid.

@ChrisFratz Instax is fun to play around with and you can get it everywhere! I kinda like the hideous cameras in the Mini line - it's not the same as Polaroid, exactly, but I think they are what the kids call "a hoot"
