if you set up an email address and only ever share it with several loved ones, I am *fairly* confident that no will message you beheading videos. Surprised how many people (many I'd expect to know better) are completely oblivious to the ways that scale distort online communities and communication. It's complicated, what people want in terms of privacy and visability always is, but some problems really are just problems bc corporate social media is uniquely terrible!

What I think is happening here is people are using dot-social and dot-cloud instances as representative of the whole of mastodon.which is just another argument for community-scale online communities!!

@jomc I'm a Lead (moderator) on Nextdoor in a small town. I'm shocked by how necessary moderation is on that site. The rules make sense and are mainly about just being kind. One rule is that we have to use real names. Most of these people know me and each other IRL. I was recently threatened in private messages by the mayor. He believed I infringed on his 1st Amendment right to free speech when another moderator closed comments on an insult-riddled thread about fireworks. It's wild.People (often correctly) laugh at Nextdoor, but it seems to me that it could be such a good platform. It would have been helpful during the pandemic if we could have discussed it without folks calling each other names, or worse. I suppose it doesn't help that we are about half old-hippie liberal and half Trump-style Republican. Nextdoor is heavily algorithm and ML driven. It's also almost a 1:1 ratio of ads to content now.

The "maybe algorithms are good actually" bs going around (on here!) is another piece to how Big Tech has distorted our expectations as users and the level of control we expect

@fisherstudio @jomc one of the scariest SM platforms I have ever been part of was Next Door. The one in my Houston neighborhood declared that I was dead - minor fender bender - and wouldn't take MY word for it that I wasn't.

@K8TDidToo @jomc Nextdoor wouldn't believe it? Or your neighbors wouldn't believe it?
