I have seen people who have been edgy-right-wing who got kicked out of twitter who have gotten groomed into full fledged skinheads and people from the same group that didn't get banned who mellowed out. @Shorono @sean I've seen people who were at odds with the social justice narrative bullied out of the "Western left" -- they don't like (neo)liberalism but still want to address their grievances with "the system" so they end up going the only place that welcomes them with open arms, the far-right. People tried to bully me into disavowing the left and I've been smeared and falsely painted as a nazi for being politically incorrect. I'm not intolerant of "progress" by any means, just won't suffer fools. I don't agree with the far-right but I see plenty of people hurting bad in their movement and think the "Left" is wrong for painting people into that box with no way out, so they can gloat about having their own kind of tyranny. Kids that grew up being bullied trying to bully others as adults instead of dealing with their mental illness in healthy ways, even wearing their mental illness like a badge of honor.

@onceuponatelle @sean moving instances, while doable, is not trivial. I doubt people will be willing to constantly do that. And what if you're happy with your instance but, for some random reason, it gets blocked from some other big ones? This can lead to silos.

@Setok @sean it's possible, sure.. but I think it's unlikely to be a widespread problem. If we are trying to fix that problem, I think making moving instances easier would be a better solution than limiting an instance or users ability to block harmful content. But that's just my opinion.

If it's a large instance that "allows all points of view," (including fash) that's also a red flag, since hateful views on that instance puts everyone on that instance at risk.The contagion has to stop somewhere.

In Italy there were pro-labour Fascists (Fascist Syndicalists) and Mussolini implemented Corporatism in the 1930's which undermined the capitalist class.The confusion here comes from the fact that "Corporatism" in Italian doesn't mean what it means in englishāit more means "Guildism" or "State Syndicalism", so it's subject to mistranslation. It technically belongs in the category of "yellow socialism".Fascist Italy didn't rail against "degenerate art" or whatever. A lot of times when people reference "Fascism" they're just referencing Nazi German policies.

@sean As a journalist, this was a big debate for a long time, and something at least at our publication, we ruled as not needing to give voice to. We were accused of bias, but to be unbiased does not mean giving voice to hateful rhetoric or untruths. More responsibility needs to be taken everywhere. @jrm4 @sean Dunno. Every so often I look at the "federated" feed when it has about-to-be-blocked instances. Like, an instance has just been federated and will no doubt be defederated, because it's a firehose of NSFW pics or nasty drama or whatever.The feed isn't very useful at those times. And that's just with a couple of those hosts, not *all* of them.Spam filters and email filtering are all that make email usable. To me that seems like a good comparison.

But basically nobody does it because it's unusably bad. Whether it's made email boring, insular and useless is a matter for debate, but personally I'm for that level of opt-in.It *is* hard that it's made email more expensive - it's "free" if you're advertised to, or costs money. But if it's *really* free, spammers kill it.
