Matt Mullenweg has reportedly committed to add ActivityPub to Tumblr. This is a huge deal. Exactly what I hoped to see: a growing federation of social platforms, all committing to work with each other. It’s happening.

@ben Good news! But what I really want is ActivityPub support for hosted WordPress.com blogs.

@ryanschultz @ben Wait, does that mean there's ActivityPub support for self-hosted WP blogs?

@killyourfm @ryanschultz @ben There is an ActivityHub plug-in for self hosted WordPress sites. Take a look at this post by @donncha - https://odd.blog/2022/11/06/how-to-add-your-blog-to-mastodon/

@ben At this rate, Twitter and Facebook/Instagram are going to be the only ones not federating, and for Twitter at least, given the rent-free living that's going on for Mastodon over there, I don't think this will necessarily be a bad thing.

It seems to me that for smaller platforms that have no chance to become monopolies, federation is a net win: You immediately increase the number of people your users can interact with,

@ben might also be a bad thing. Look at what adding XMPP to Google and Facebook products did to XMPP, after the commercial products had grown very big...

@jr @ben - Yeah, I'm personally worried about a "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" of ActivityPub... hoping that Tumblr isn't large enough to do that. Now, if I could spin up my own Tumblr server! Sure... but Tumblr is a centralized platform. So. Proceed with caution is my goto.

@tinker @jr @ben Flip side is, Tumblr is now owned by the folks who are the corporate face of WordPress. They're used to being a decent sized fish in a huge pond. Embrace, extend, extinguish isn't Automattic's MO.
