@libc I mean, for the $1.99 I spent on it, maybe I deserve it.But holy shit, it's somehow gotten even worse than I remember it.

@sean Has anyone ever, in the history of Cpanel, used the Softalicious installer?

@aalaap @moliver I'm going to be really cringey and say that a very-very young version of me used to download things to my desktop, and then upload them to the public_html/ directory using an FTP browser plugin for Firefox. The reason this is cringey, is that I would also update files locally for changes (theme CSS, configuration files, etc) and just re-upload it using FTP.I've come a long way. 😅

@sean a friend somehow acquired modern cpanel and plesk a year back and we installed it to see how much it changed. it has, but kind of in a janky way. plesk seems classier at leastwhat does suck is i think you could do a modern cpanel well with like, containers/k8s/systemd/etc. the pieces are there, and something like cockpit proves it

@sean @moliver 👌 i did that on the desktop when I was young too and then on my Android phone a few years later! I would never have been able to fix prod from my phone if it was all Git and CI/CD!

@libc Yeah, I've totally thought the same thing before. My hubris says "gee, it can't be *that* hard!", but it would be really cool to have something simple, straightforward, and uncluttered. The sad truth is that fucking around in a terminal just feels easier at this point. 15 years of a Linux desktop will do that to you.

@aalaap @moliver what's really wild at this point is that I can use a terminal app on my phone to do all of my server administration.I've literally used systemctl and journalctl to fix problems while waiting in a checkout line before.

@kinetix @aalaap @moliver I honestly feel like it's a bad habit anymore. 😅 At this point, I just try to do all of my edits in a dev environment, that way I can just git commit something if it's a theme, and git fetch from the server end. That way, I'm not uploading a file one change at a time, or doing the same thing with a zillion git commits.

@seanYeah, and I've yet to get in to that workflow. I'm happy to make backups and then changes, sometimes in a dev environment first, but I don't have the single commit control. In all fairness to doing a static site and whatnot, nobody should be ashamed of rsync over ssh. @aalaap @moliver
