@stux@mstdn.social I do wonder though, what if a company with a ton of capital made an instance that's actually popular, like tens of millions of users popular, and then decided to defederate from everyone else?It's not even that much of a thought experiment since it's happened in the past with say XMPP, which Google and Facebook both used to support but then cut, and users still stayed on their platforms.So while no one can buy the fediverse in practice, it still feels possible for a company greedy enough to hog all the space if they actually wanted to, because 99% of the users would be on a single instance and couldn't interact with anyone else, making it a quasi Twitter.Though I am doubtful this would happen due to the nature of mastodon/fedi and its user base, but it's still something I ponder from time to time.

@stux Hi StuxThere's one scenario that still keeps me thinking about. Let's say a silly billionaire with multiple mental health issues is willing to blow let's say something like 40+ billions to mess things up for the #fediverse. He now brings up a mass of #fediverse servers and asks all his cultist followers to join his instances. Wouldn't that be a vector to make things complicated for us? I just try to figure out all aspects of a #federated system. Email has issues too for selfhosters

@stux Russian and Saudi propaganda networks are probably working out how to compromise and influence this place too. They are still operating - anytime the fascist Meloni had a story on youtube there quickly were several thousand comments "isn't she beautiful", "I wish she were running my country", etc. Russians in particular work by drowning out opposition with sheer volume.

@stux Except, the billionaire would probably take over joinmastodon.org as well, and he could then impose different rules that the servers listed on their have to adhere to, effectively changing the main/big servers that get promoted to the mainstream audience.I think it definitely could affect the fediverse in a significant way, because as it stands, joinmastodon.org is currently kind of the centralized aspect of Mastodon.
