mastodon.art has defederated from journa.host . There are a few problematic reasons, like scouring people's content to use and quote without permission, but most notably, they've used a tool developed by kiwifarms (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwi_Farms) to scan instance blocklists . The fedi culture generally is very anti-tabloid-journalism and obviously there are concerns about privacy, but using a tool developed by known harassers for the sole purpose of harassing is over the line.

@Curator @tek I've been against blocking the whole domain, but this is very concerning. Kiwifarms is one of the most vile groups on the net. I just wanted you to be aware of the situation.

The overwhelming response from dotART to this post - and more besides who are not even on this instance - has been positive, grateful, and understanding. If you're not on this instance, please don't tell me how to run it. Instead, go spin up your own instance and run it however you want, and I will do you the courtesy of not hopping into your mentions, whenever you post about how you're *not* proactively protecting your userbase from potentially toxic communities, that you're doing it wrong.😘

@Curator Genuine question: what is wrong with searching and quoting material people have chosen to publish publicly? Blocklists are public too aren't they? I understand that Kiwi farms is repugnant but journa's mission seems to be public interest journalism AFAICT. (I'm not particularly familiar with the site.)

It’s not usually much fun.You are perhaps used to Twitter and thinking of this as Public?This is someone’s private courtyard. It’s a house party or art salon, not a public street.Someone snapping pics at a private party might be asked to leave. A group that tends to include people who won’t leave might be asked to police their own or stay out.

@kinetix @tek @TrismegistusMx Yeah, the fact that they needed to convene a meeting with all the other admins in order to discuss whether or not they should block a known transphobe who was already being transphobic on the plaform was blerrrgh. And there still hasn't been a response to https://eldritch.cafe/@awkwardlefty_cj/109373748710799625 , so I won't unblock until there's a clear policy in place for how they'll deal with that stuff in future.

I don’t want to block a bunch of legit journalists because of a few assholes, but darned if I’ll let those assholes poison the well just because a few mods are wringing their hands over how much hatred they should allow on their server.
