@KEEPER I assume he's referring to the fact that Trump's account (and therefore his tweet history) is no longer suspended. I don't know if I'm more perturbed by the fact he's still going on about "muh insurrection" or the fact he's doing it on fedi (probably the second one tbh)

@KEEPER fedi is short for fediverse. It's the network that emerges from activity pub federation which allows us to communicate with people outside of our own home servers (instances). A lot of new people have taken to calling it Mastodon or the Mastodon Network, but in reality masto is but one piece of software that speaks this protocol.

@thatguyoverthere didn't it come from Mastodon though? I remember talking to a guy a few years ago about a mastodon that he was creating, I'm not sure if this is the same site or it's a different guy, but he essentially said that anyone can join when he gets up and running, I haven't heard from him since then though, but it's still very confusing to me.

@KEEPER no mastodon is not the first, but it might be the most popular. Activity pub is the protocol which makes it possible for mastodon servers to communicate, but others preceded it. Masto might have been the first to use it for microblogging (mimicking twitter to some extent), but diaspora, hubzilla, and friendica I think all predate it (probably others). There are also older implementations like ostatus (used by gnusocial)

@KEEPER honestly IMHO it wouldn't matter whether mastodon was the first implementation or not. It would be more appropriate to sway the AP network since activity pub is the underlying protocol. Fedi is what we tend to call it, but activity pub isn't the only federating protocol so we might be ignoring other technology but colloquially we know we're referring to activity pub when we say fedi or fediverse.

@KEEPER I am not the most knowledgeable about the history myself but always happy to share what I know. I've only been around for a few years myself, and my first activitypub server was mastodon, but I actually like pleroma a lot more. You can check out https://fediverse.party and see alot of different software that speaks our protocol.

@thatguyoverthere well the dude I was talking to back then went by the name of nomad capitalist, and I found him through Discord, I think the dude lived in Louisiana or something, he told me it was a flyover state LOL. But yeah he was talking about building this site that would allow anyone to join, but if his wasn't the original then all these other systems use Mastodon in some way or another if I understand that correctly.

@KEEPER they use activity pub, and likely some of the content shared was composed via mastodon, but no many projects share no code with mastodon.
