1) How do I get my own #mastodon /server? I am not a sysadmin. There is 2 routes to this. a) a managed hosting like masto.host.➕ very good for no technical experience. web server cost is built in. somebody else is doing all the maintenance➖ it does cause a bit of a centralization, very few reputable options so limits the options to move.#feditips #twitterMigration #fediverse

@eylul also you can cooperate with some other people from your social graph to make your own small community

b) yunohost+vps➕ yunohost makes it relatively easy to backup your server and move. a subdomain domain for you. graphic interface to manage your server. active and helpful community around it➖ occasional debugging can be needed. you are responsible for updating and backing up your data with tools providedb.1) yunohost+local computer/raspberryPisame as above but some internet providers block ports. getting them opened might not always be a problem

2) which software to usea) mastodon➕ very stable, good UI. supported by default by apps➖ very large harddisks space use due to design. (it is not really designed for single user instances) generally resource heavy. can be expensive on a vpsb) gotoSocial hometown pleroma➕ often designed for smaller communities and efficiency➖ might not have all features (although there are quite stable options there. ) might not have as big of a userbase

3) gaining an audience. relays can be a good solution to bootstrap but also they can be resource intensive at the moment. Go for a reputable relay that has moderation rules if you don't want to be flooded in spam.you can keep your old account as a backup to watch tags in a community you are part of at first if you are just starting out.

3) gaining an audience (cont)follow people who post and boost in topics you are interested in. (this doesn't mean follow every account you find or be spammy. focus on the quality of your content and treat this as a place of meaningful dialogue the way you would in a community)

4) moderationhave a CoC. yes even if you are one person. it still helps admins who run into your instance for first time. it doesn't have to be a few pages long but use the server rules tool to create one to clarify what another admin should expect keep an eye on your federated occasionally to watch for anything weird for first few weeks. fediblock tag is a good resource too.

5) maintenance. if you are on managing your own server via yunohost or server install keep an eye on it to make sure updates are done.for mastodon, clean up old posts and media regularly. yunohost does this and email you but things might break or your resources might require to change the default number of days of data you want to keep. Do it BEFORE you run out of space or recovery will be hard.backup your data, outside your primary server.

@MrClon THAT... is a whole different survivor's guide. :) but yes you definitely can, but at that point there is a lot more discussions that needs to happen around moderation and administration as you are basically responsible not just yourself but other people's data.
