While I get the reasons to not have robust text search built into Mastodon (both technical and community), I sure do miss being able to easily search my own posts to dig up something old that I want to revisit/add to. Especially old threads.

@cassidyjamesText search that only works on one's own posts seems pretty harmless. Maybe you could suggest that on the Mastodon forum? It would be great if we could opt-in to our own posts being searchable. I get that this is much harder to get right in a federated network though.

@strypeyYour own posts, as well as ones by people you follow, and everything you ever liked or boosted, is already fully searchable.@cassidyjames

@strypey @cassidyjames I'm curious: what is potentially harmful about allowing Mastodon-wide search? I can see potential technical difficulties, but I'm not sure why the feature would be problematic.

@mux2000@strypey @cassidyjames I never achieved this with the search bar and a words. It returns nothing. Do I do something wrong ?

@ZekovskiMaybe it depends what app you're using? I just tried it with FediLab and it seems I am able to keyword search the posts the server I'm on knows about. Thanks for the tip @mux2000 :) @cassidyjames

@mux2000 @strypey technically, yes, but in my experience it is much harder to filter it down to what you want. Like you can on Twitter.

@cassidyjamesIf you can describe the desired functionality in detail on the Mastodon forum, or even file an issue in it at their GH, it might end up getting added to a future version.@mux2000

@Connoruiop @strypey the quoted reason is to combat the ease of targeted harassment. E.g. search for a specific term and show up in everyone’s replies to harass them about it.I don’t know if I buy that, though, because I am not sure how that differs from searching for hashtags or certain terms across your network. I guess it is harder to find randos who happen to use a specific word?

@cassidyjames @strypey I suppose that could be an issue? I can't help but think that the discoverability improvement would outweigh that risk when you could target people other ways like you said.

@ConnoruiopKeyword search can be a very emotive topic here, and discussion of it often produces more heat than light. Here be dragons!Having got the Public Service Message out of the way...@cassidyjames

@ConnoruiopPeople can avoid coming up in hashtag searches by not using hashtags. That's not true of general keyword search. That said, I tend agree that there must be better solutions to harassment prevention than hamstringing the usability of the platform for people just wanting to find their kin. These comments aren't always respected anyway. There are fediverse servers and apps outside of Mastodon that do have keyword search functions.@cassidyjames
