I’m beginning to see quite a few “this is a positive space, there is no place for negativity here” style posts (especially by newer folks) so I want to hopefully clear something up:This is also a space to be protected. From fascists, bigots, etc., and also from corporate capture (unless you want to watch it turn into what the greater web turned into. Some of us lived through that once. Would be nice not to again.) Opposing such things—and vocally if need be—is not a negative; it is a positive.

@aral Without specific examples, I can't be sure what you're criticizing here. But I worry about conflating two quite different types of positive/ negative. I'm happy to see reasoned criticism, which is by necessity "negative" in one sense. I agree that's valuable both to protecting the cultures of the 'verse and shining a light on problems in other aspects of the world. I don't want to see negative *attitudes*, which includes bigotry, but also ad hominem, how-dare-you-ism, pile-ons etc.@dan

@panamared27401 I was thinking more of the fact that the USA was founded on conquest and slavery. Those attitudes have evolved over time but supremacist attitudes have always remained influential. For instance, after the civil war, the neo-Confederates still ran the Southern states and even spread their attitudes into the north. Even after the civil rights movements of the 1960s, these people only grudgingly conceded that they couldn't be racist in polite company. But it's not just southern racism. There's always been a deep elitism and contempt for people who don't fit into the dominant institutions -- and those attitudes very easily develop into fascism.

I agree, particularly when people are being intelligent and articulate. I can empathize, though, with admins who begrudgingly decide to ban certain instances because the signal to noise ratio is so low. In the spirit of free software, however, I would always push very hard for solutions that empower the individual user as much as possible (to disable recommended mutes or whatever). But yeah unless you’re engaging one intentional community which is a totally valid and enjoyable use case, the only way to “see the fedi” on the existent infrastructure is to have your own instance (or maintain several alts).
