@mastodonmigration that is striking, wow. Wasn't alone in thinking that was the last straw for the bird site

@mastodonmigration not that the decline wasn't inevitable since ol' Musky took over, but it sure happened faster than expected

@dan @mastodonmigration I feel like the speed with which he tanked his $44B investment was either a testament to how ego driven he really is, or intentional. Both are pretty horrible prospects.I don't know if a billionaire villain buying his own bullshit and failing so spectacularly is better or worse than him working to destroy a major worldwide communications platform.

@ManiacalVIt's such a relief to see I'm not the only one considering both possibilities. I got shouted down here yesterday for suggesting Melon Usk might just be incompetent, rather than working to a coherent agenda of sabotage. Had a real AITA moment ;)@dan @mastodonmigration

@mastodonmigrationThe most urgent priority now is to find ways of spinning up hundreds (thousands?) of new servers. Particularly getting formal organizations (eg news media) running servers for their own staff (and maybe subscribers?). Horizontal scaling is going to be much more sustainable than admins of existing servers having to constantly up their hosting spend and recruit more mods.

@strypey @mastodonmigrationGiven the cost of sending an event to ever instance that contains a follower, I tend to think instances should be sized to have as many users as possible while not having to use complex systems to split an instance over many servers. Looking at some existing large instances it seems a single mid spec server (say 48 core 350GB ram) can cope with 100k users.

@strypey @mastodonmigration - some interesting discussion surrounding news organizations, or employers, owning their own instance where employees publish content. The news organizations could (or would) own and control that data - and if an employee wanted to leave - lock accounts (similar to e-mail) reducing or eliminating the employee’s ability to take it, or keep their presence. I suspect there is a desire by some to park on neutral instances for data ownership/security reasons.

@strypey @mastodonmigration My contribution to this effort was DigitalOcean droplet ... I made my own instance this afternoon and now I can invite family and friends and grow organically from a true ring of trust. People I know IRL.#mastodon #instance

@strypey @mastodonmigration - that said, it may be more tenable for employees to maintain two accounts - one with their employer (understanding it can go away), and a personal one on a neutral instance (similar to a Twitter handle associated with their news agency/employer).

Some good points there @brett . Keep in mind that in Mastodon it's not possible to migrate your data between servers, although you can get your old account to redirect to your new account. You're right that employers could probably prevent this too. Having a separation between work accounts and personal accounts, as people do with email, is probably wise.(1/2)@mastodonmigration

@brettThe elephant in the room here (pun intended ;) is who owns a journalist's posts? If they are posting in work time, as part of their job, that could arguably count as 'work for hire' in copyright jargon. Depending on the journalist's contract, that could mean they're owned by the employer, as with the articles they write for that employer to publish.(2/2)@mastodonmigration
