@stux Call me crazy but when the first in the list of reporting options is "I don't like it", it suggests this is a reporting option, regardless of the intent of having that option (i.e. to lead people to the mute & block keys). FWIW telling people not to do something on social media, doesn't stop them doing it - at least not en masse.

@stux While I can understand your point of view, I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of giving someone an option and then telling them not to use it. As long as the feature exists, it will be used.I'm also not sure how I feel about the banning part. If I knew reporting could get me a ban, I wouldn't use the report feature at all, thus defeating its entire purpose.

Realized that was their party, but not for me, so I just clicked block their instance and that’s it. No more “sexy time” introductions showing up on my introductions hashtag. It’s easy to do. @stux I'm not surprised this is a tactic given that mass reporting innocuous tweets, just to get people suspended (quite often trans folk), was a popular form of targeted harassment and Twitter didn't care why the reports were coming in and didn't seem to have any idea that sometimes people act in very bad faith.

@stux Can the text be edited on the pop-up or next page or whatever (I've never reported anyone so I'm not sure what the UI is like) to add something like "If you are being a Karen, use block or mute instead. If you are reporting actual abuse, continue/click here." (in more PC terms!) Stop them at the point of entry!

@stux I've only been on here since last Sunday. I carefully read the server rules. I carefully read some of the guides that people had posted. I didn't come across anything the first 4 days. But decided I didn't need to see, X X escort service, so I blocked that. Then I did see something that probably would have made me angry in the long run, so I muted that. It's not difficult to manage yourself. People need to invest the time. Not expect everything on a plate.

@stux Very fair point. I think people are still adjusting to how the servers work here. This isn't thousands of servers with paid dedicated staff to handle general discussion grievances.Typically it's a server with only one admin or two and people need to be a bit more self sufficient. Make use of the tools available and serious issues like harassment, server rule violations, report those.

@stux Banning those who make false reports is definitely something that belongs into Mastodon server policies. Without such rules, there's no disadvantage to bad behavior. Not just that bad behavior will spread, it will become a condition for survival!

@stux I tried that. The block button didn’t work and reporting was the only way to get rid of the post. I’m a boomer new to mastodon, not proficient on computers, and asked for help from the admin. Got no answer. I’ll be happy to leave and try something else if this doesn’t work out.

@stux One can assume that if they're doing it on Mastodon, they were doing it just as much on Twitter. One can presume that all sorts of people who were not trolls but just people with opposing viewpoints got reported constantly.It's easy to believe that twtr had to resort to automation to deal with it, so if you got reported enough, you'd automatically get throttled.

@stux: agreed... block and mute is easy and I use them as filters: I #block users who are businesses or porno or any other disgusting stuff. #mute I use for users I don't understand or am not interested in their toots. I always check their profilejust in case I am rong. This way I do no harm to #Mastodon or admins who are overloaded just now.

@stux Blocking/muting is the solution. Unfollowing is another one. But why does the problem exist? It's because we Twitter refugees are united by contempt for Elon Musk but often precious little else. To avoid flame-war baggage we've brought with us, some demand bureaucratic solutions; they demand you take sides. I'm glad you won't. Maybe political posts are something we should hide behind a warning. I'm thinking of doing that. I don't mind following those with very different politics.

@stux Please, forgive me if this was partially me. The other day, I recognized the beginnings of something rather awful that I had already seen happen on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. I reported and blocked the three accounts in question. My apologies if it added to your load. I don't want to be one of "those people" but I do want Masto to stay its beautiful, wonderful, unobscured by haters/bots/prostitution/freakish sex workers/advertisements self. It is nice here. But then you can't "quote" the post to start a new thread, you're just boosting his original post. So the replies get all mixed in with the hundreds of others already underneath the original post. @stux FYI I have reported about ten accounts yesterday. Trust me on this: I have only reported the most crass cases where antisemitic and homophobic insults were combined with calls for self-harm. As for the other trolls, I muted or blocked them depending on how bad their insults were.Seriously: There ARE limits to #freespeech, and some idiots do not respect those at all. And no: this is NOT about what a person likes or not. Doxxing or calls for self-harm go way too far.
