The Paradox of Popper.Everyone who references "The Paradox of Tolerance" almost certainly has not read the book, because it was written specifically to destroy the worldview which they're espousing.

I also recommend James C. Scott and Nassim Taleb. But Popper is incredibly significant for really effectively taking down the entire industry of bullshit philosophy, from Plato to Hegel. The fact that people know him for a footnote in his book is tragedy, and the fact that these people are Platonists is farce.

I wouldn't call it important as much as cliché. People are referencing Popper to try to sound smart - but to my original point, it makes them sound really stupid.

@cjd I wish I would have read all those references to be able to really understand this book

My general rule of thumb: Trust noone, always read the source material.1. Popper is famous because Popper was a an exceptionally intelligent philosopher. When you read a history book synopsis of his work, the author is almost certainly neither of these things - so they almost certainly missed important nuance.2. Everybody is subjective. Popper himself was criticized for blaming communist ideology for the rise of fascism. The person who makes a simplified version of his writing is going to apply their subjective view to it and if that's all you read, you'll think that view was Popper's.

Another rule I have: Read the words of people of accomplishment: Xenophon, Andrew Jackson & Huey Long. Not Kant, Nietzsche & Hegel.

Third one: Try to find old material which is still relevant. Age doesn't improve anything, but longevity is a good sign of value.

this context is often left out in particular..."I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be most unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols."

That's a small piece of it. The fact is, Popper spent hundreds of pages deconstructing the entire line of philosophy from Plato to Marx - which is foundational to the modern Leftist ideology. So for a Leftist to quote him is ALMOST as stupid as them saying "The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race."
