But on the other side, take a country like Japan, and you can see that keeping nearly everyone else out did not work out particularly well for them either.It seems to me that closed cultures degrade over time - while open cultures grow stronger. The civil war was literally about a peaceful divorce. Jefferson Davis did not want war .. and neither did Sherman. They both knew it would be a disaster. The separation was fully allowed by the US deceleration of independence, even though the Supreme Court ruled the rebellion unconstitutional after the fact. Slavery wasn’t the real issue (less than 5% of Southerns owned slaves). The real issue truly was State’s rights. Slavery was on its way out internationally. The war accelerated it, sure .. but I think many countries were facing moral crisis over the slave trade. It would have gone away in 10~20 years on its own.The influx of South/Central American immigrates does have the advantage of them being more culturally similar to Americans than say Muslims going into Europe. A woman wearing a bikini in Chili or Argentina is pretty normal and not a stonable offense. Still, we aren’t vetting those who come across … and the people who come across illegally do not have a background check papertrail that does reduce criminality (or at least provides a means of deportation).Europe is going to be in a much worse situation, but in either case, uncontrolled immigration to solve a potential population collapse is a terrible idea. The only team giving it the ol’ earnest, upstanding, moral try for race blindness has been the comfortably middle-class whites with wiggle room, and that’s fading fast. Soon, the guatemalan will wait in the bread lines to save a spot for the other guat family down the street, the punjabi bank manager will cut some extra slack for the customers that speak his dialect while repossessing the others, all while the gullible rubes playing by the old stated rules of american egalitarianism will lose more than ever. We’ll never be uniform again, and without severe technological handicaps we probably can’t magically introduce a unifying cultural force to bring everyone together in some big societal tent. America simply has an entirely, utterly alien ecosystem compared to centuries past. We’re really only “America” in name, and the fact we’re squatting in the ruins of greater men.

The south, the east will largely be lost causes, but the midwest, north, and mountain west may see a renaissance of sorts as they bleed their competing states of the able, the sane, and the skilled. Maybe a collective of states, like 5 of them get together and make their own interstate compact, alliance, etc. They could share currency, back it with labor/gold/silver, and become a shining beacon for the clawing hordes to mooch off once again. The shitholes will have the media agitate about how the productive people moved away and “looted” the people’s just property, while the hungry throngs move inexorably towards the bountiful lands of plenty (backed by the UN) and then we got ourselves a civil war! I was only objecting to the idea we need people to be programmers and engineers, not that a lot of immigrants are untrainable as programmers or engineers, let alone the many other skills a society needs.If you can’t read and write and can’t do basic math there aren’t a lot of places open to you in society.But that’s also a serious problem because most of our domestic coming out of high school can’t read and write, can’t do math, and can’t even read a fucking clock.Clocks and remedial algebra are a total fucking mystery to most of the white Gen Z kids I encounter day to day.

For a third topic you can also draw direct lines between from the 1977 NYC Blackout and hiphop/proto-rap culture that rose up from it. Hiphop displaced the more respectable (and not-thuggish) blues musicians of the mid-century and eventually gave way to rap, gangsta rap, and thug culture.
