I've got a #FediBlock to discuss: qoto.orgWe've had them blocked for years due to harassment from their admin directed toward our instance, users, me specifically, & the same to other instances.Plus, their CoC leaves a lot to be desiredSeveral folks this week asked about them, and we have a rule to not share block reasons for dogpiling and harassment.I DMd a response to someone who asked about it, and wouldn't you know it, but I received an email from them asking about the block

@david I am very saddened to hear you felt harassed. I was never aware of this, in fact all IU recall is going out of my way to support you, help with technical issues on your server, and promote your instance. Then one day out of nowhere just saw us blocked and never knew why.If i knew you felt attacked, even accidentally, I would have apologized much sooner. But just to be clear I am very sad to hear you ever felt attacked by me or any of our users, very sorry that happened.Please feel free to report or share any such incidents from me or our users and they will be suspended,. We purposefully choose not to disclose reasons why specific instances are blocked.This is not the only example of harassment that we'd get from other instances. People ask why something is blocked, and want to get into a fight about it, as opposed to moving on, both as in ignoring us, or moving from our instance if they don't like our blocks.I know that moving is not super simple, but I'm here to protect our community

Why is sharing block reasons sometimes bad?Besides issues like this, there are plenty of examples (including a recently journalism focused instance) where they use tools (developed by Kiwi Farms trolls) to find out who has them blocked.The only real use there is for harassment. If I don't know that someone has me blocked, I won't even see it.

I personally think it's a lot better to notify each instance and the reason you ban them. Providing transparency is lot better than hideous acts.If you are censoring some instance by whatever reason you consider it's fine, there are some extreme instances who are incompatible each others, like Liberty with Communism/Fascism, like LGBT with Terf, just to mention few of them.But if you are censoring some instance because "reasons", it's not really cool for users of both instances.

@waltercool Well to be fair he does claim itt was "harassment".. which is a serious accusation and if true would jusitfy blocking QOTO.The problem is he doesnt even bother providing a screenshot or link to a single example, never reported a single example that could be acted on, nothing...@david

I don't really like the idea of a Fediverse disconnecting each other, I think the users are the biggest losers here.Even if someone is radically opposed to me, I would prefer to block that user, instead of blocking that instance.For ex. before Spinster decided to block me, had few users with quite great conversations. Same when mastodon.social did it to me (and unblock me by request of their users).Those users at Spinster had no idea I been banned until I made an account on their instance to let them know.

@tonic I think I found the only post he could have possibly meant by "harassment". I want to post it here for the record, as this was the last communication we had before his server blocked me.In short he had boosted an inflammatory (and outright lie) about QOTO. It was about one of our features and it lied about how itt worked in order to frame us as privacy violating, despite the feature respecting post privacy. Since me and David at this point were on very good terms as far as I knew I was personally hurt by this but responded respectfully. I even made sure to do it in private so he didnt feel attacked. Attached our the interactions from me that he considered "harassment", as you can see I went out of my way to be considerate.@david
